You are consistently misspelling Telugu as Telegu.

Sorry for the spelling mistake and I stand corrected.Telugu language has been described as 'sundara telungu' by Mahakavi Bharatiar.I am also keen on learning the same and I have started learning the from my junior colleague who is from Andhra.Let me tell you that it would be an addition to half a dozen languages that I already know.

Dear Mr.Narayana
Are you aware that there is no language called Tamil? It is Tamizh. For want of similar letter to express'ZH'the language is mispronounced as Tamil by others. If i am correct, only Tamizh and Malayalam have this unique letter in their alphabet.

Yes, you are correct. There is no letter in English or any other language to represent the sound of what you have shown as 'zh'. I feel that the spelling Tamil is adopted as 'l' is nearer to the unique letter than 'zh'.
As Tamil has fewer letters in its alphabet than Kannada or Telugu ( a single letter represents sounds ka,kha,ga, gha) it is desirable that a standardised spelling and pronunciation are adopted. When Azhagiri's daughter was married The Hindu gave the bride's name as Kanthi while another paper said Gandhi. Prof. Anantha Raman who taught me chemistry spells his name as indicated here, while Prof.Anantha Krishnan spells his name as Ananda Krishnan which led to non-Tamilians (and a few Tamilians too) to mistakenly believe the name is Aananda Krishnan.

Narayana, not Narayan

Thanks for highlighting three of my monsoon photos. You have named me Narayan instead of Narayana, further truncating an already truncated name. I may now be mistaken to be a Tamilian.

Yes, it is corrected as soon as I protested. Those who have not seen the mistake must be wondering what the whole fuss is about!

No Mr.Narayana.We know what the fuss is all about. You are unhappy that you could be mistaken for being a tamil on being called Narayan.Let me tell you in most of India lord Vishnu is Known as Narayan. However,I only wanted to convey that divisiveness is not a virtue.it is a weakness.

Time to call for a truce! I reiterate that I would be happy to be known by the name my parents gave me, however flattering it may be to be called by Lord Vishnu's Tamil name. If I am unhappy with being called Narayanappa, does it mean I am against Kannadigas?

Dear Mr.Narayana
Narayan is the sanskrit name adopted by not only Tamils but rest of india. I appreciate that you have the democratic right to be called by whatever name you wish to be called by.Glad to note your statement that you are not against any community and thereby I have been able to convince you of the broader objective.

In Telugu Lord Vishnu is called either Narayana or Narayanudu. (Telugu is Ajantha bhasha where practically every word ends with a vowel, while Tamil is Halantha bhasha with practically all words ending with a consonant).
Do not flatter yourself about convincing me about anything. I had right convictions before you were born.

Dear Mr.Narayana
It is true that different indian languages spell the names and pronounce differently. There is no point in being touchy about that.It depends on the construct of the language and how it is spoken e.g.In Bengali, Narayan is pronounced as 'Narayon'.I love Bengali for what it is and enjoy conversing/listening to it.You must listen to Rabindra Sangeet which is rich in beautiful verses with profound meanings and transports you to a different world. Therefore,it is imperative for us to appreciate the beauty of each language and its inherent richness not only grammatically but also emotionally. This is my take and it does not matter whether you were born earlier or not.Wisdom is not always based on chronological age.In fact sometimes I feel I should have been born later than when I did, so that I could have imbibed more from the knowledge revolution that is taking place and had more things to learn and appreciate.

So now you agree that the spelling and pronunciation "Narayan" is not adopted over all parts of "rest of India".
Our conversations, in spite of many interesting things that are emerging, are getting sterile. We are not altogether different. Both of us have cosmopolitan outlook, both of us lived in different parts of India, interacted with different groups of Indians and are tolerant, indeed enthusiastic about the rich diversity our country offers. By now I hope I have convinced that I am not antagonistic to any language or community. So, instead of trying to win debating points shall we call for a truce, before rediffmail puts a stop to the dialogue? Amen!
