One of the major factor which affects the taste of mango or for that reason any fruit is the way it is ripened. I really wonder how many of us today know the natural taste of mango. Today even a banana which is ripened chemically has a taste which is far inferior to what it tasted say almost a generation back. Today in India there is no control over the quality of fruits sold in market. I consider myself fortunate to have tasted naturally ripened mango and people who share my experience will agree with me. I believe that any fruit ripened in natural way is the best be it Alphanso Mango or Banganapalli. Its like comparing Sunil with Sachin.
Alphonso or Hapus is extremely expensive for many reasons: 1) It looks good 2) It has good texture 3) It keeps well and is therefore good for export. But unfortunately for it's fans (there is already a herd mentality voting for it here), great taste is not its cost determining quality. But it has great branding, because idiotic people think that because it is costly it is the best. It is one of the world's great overrated items...

Very true. There is one variety by name Kalappad (we have this tree at home) which beats every other mango by a mile.

Right! Alphonso is one of the most overrated mango. Guys in the west haven't tasted and do not even want to try Banganapalli one of the best varieties of Mangoes in India. They just say nothing can match Alphonso. One has to pity their ignorance.

My humble opinion is that Banganapalli is the best. Others may disagree and that's ok. It has 1) Great size (you get more mango) 2) Wonderfull texture (good for both cut fruit and shakes. 3) Subtle and distinctive flavor an d taste. 4) Tastes even better when refrigerated (unique quality) 5) Probably the only mango where you can eat the skin (as tasty as the fruit)
Unfortunately, it is cultivated in large quantities and is therefore comparatively inexpensive. This leads the ignorant (especially the upper class) to be dismissive about it.
