British did not unified princely states - Sardar Patel did! British did not stop subjugation - they continued it. Muslim domination is only in northern india and rest of India was ruled by Rajas & Maharajas, whom people loved them for their beneficial rule! Do you mean before British arrival there was no Universities in India? All the roads, dams, railways were specifically built for the benefit of their trade. Yes some benefit was availed by common people also. British knowledge was basically based on western universalism, crux of which is to grab, steal even kill others to enrich themselves. No doubt there was plenty of opportunities for this in India. Imposing English on India, actually made Indian an inferior class of People. English, grammar of which is copied from Sanskrit is a superior language. and many tech people agree that Sanskrit is a better language for I.T. British brought in many rules, which aggravated the atrocities committed by the upper classes/castes, which also helped Christian evangelists in converting Hindus to Christianity.
British rule was the golden era in Indian History (in spite of occasionalAbuses):
1. British unified over 550 princely states into a single entity. 2. They ended Moslem domination in India and liberated Hinddus from 1000-year long subjugation that eventually led to the rise of Hinddu intellectual class who could eventually fight for the freedom of India. 3. Britishers built excellent dams, bridges, railways, raods, etc which unheard in the rest of Asia (during 19th century). 4. British opened many universities and colleges in India, which helped Hinddus to rise as an intellectual class. 5. British introduced English helped India to become a software superpower in the world today. 6. British rule considerably weakened the barbaric caste-system, even though remnants of the system remain. Even superstitions decreased to a great extent. 7. Due to better medical services, death rate dropped and birth rate increased. 8. British rule altogether gave a new direction to Indians who were mired in ignorance, superstitions, caste-barbarity and opened an era of modern civilization in India.

appears you did not listen to shashi tharoor- for once a mentally western enslaved indian who put the british rule in the correct perspective. Galbraith was shocked to hear Nehru say" I am the last Englishman ( alas not a gentleman) left in India" No wounder we sing paeans of The British rule.
