While Sealdah- New Delhi Rajdhani & Duronto started running the food quality used to be good if not excellent as rail standard. But the fare has gone up by different means but food quality has taken a worst turn and railway administration is silent spectators only.
Got to have dinner on 29 Oct, 2015 on board Kolkata - Agra Cantt exp through IRCTC e-catering at Gaya. The food was fresh & hot, nicely packed and sufficient amount for an adult. Rice, 3 parathas, dal, chicken curry, salad, pickle and soan papri were served on the train seat for just Rs 126. How I wished they could have given a 200ml pouch of water as well. I would recommend to all railway travellers to give this a try.
Excellent best hats off service to Indian railways... you wont find any other country in globe providing the kind of services in Indian Railway... really you should be proud to say that I travel with Indian Railways... isnt it?

The topic by itself is absolute rubbish like railway foods and snacks. The idea of Food supply is how to rob passengers. Food supplied by railways is tasteless and costly. However in some pockets, one may get some fresh food by private local vendor. At stations in south India, you may get fresh hot Idly etc. but north Indians may not like it. For long journey, it always helps to carry home made food which will be cheaper and tasty. Most consumable item is tea/coffee but it's simply water and amount is less.

There are good trains and bad trains and simlarly there are good pantry cars and otherwise also. Only thing is better to avooid the food from outside while travelling to the possible extend so that you can avoid getting illness due to food poisoning
