Excessive reliance on GPS (and exhaustion of smart phones)is a fact beyond my comprehension. As long as we don't have UNIFORM conditions of roads everywhere, or when you have serious problem of language or odd hours of nights, GPS is not worthwhile in our country. One of my friend (relying on GPS)gone from Kolhapur to Nagpur via Beed, Jalna (potholed road), where as you get 4 lane road from Kolhapur - Pune to Jalna, saving time and efforts. Tourist Maps of TTK Publication, Nest and Wings (In Himalayas), Road trip books (Himalaya) by Mr. Koko Singh, 52 week-end series from various cities by Outlook magazine are necessary ammunition for road trips. Congratulations on your efforts. Do try to book your bike from Pune to Ambala by Train and try Himalaya on Bike, Simply divine experience !!
