realize Life is more important than Money! For more advanced people, its about Peace & Happiness. Unfortunately, people are so enmeshed in this materialistic world, they are unaware of the priorities in life! My heart goes out to the family. RIP

No doubt that this was very unfortunate. My heart goes out to the family.

I travel often and have always noted one thing about Indians. They always prefer to walk, whether it is night or day. The simple reason is to save money and sometimes also to save time since calling a cab can take some time in the suburbs in many countries.

But walking by Indians by Indians is mainly to save money - I think Indian culture stresses the fact that you must have \"savings\". That very small expense counts and the importance of compounding after saving. I have seen Indians save money even at the expense of safety, by walking long distances on deserted sidewalks and through shortcuts like parks. If you are in the US or UK and you see a lone guy walking on the side of a road, most probably it will be an Indian.

I will not walk through a park outside my house at night leave alone in a foreign country where most people privately feel Indians are not welcome(especially the lower class of people there). Drug addicts, murderers and low lifes are everywhere and there are high chances of meeting them in deserted and dark areas at night. I think we should all know that - and if you still go out into the dark and deserted areas at night the risk is yours.

Again I feel sorry about this incident, but I read somewhere that her room mate used to tell her not to walk through that park....Maybe she should have listened.

The Delhi rape victim also... Going out late night is to be avoided. instea of taking taking bus so late, she should have taken Ola cab, right?
These common sense suggestion are painted as indian evil cultural non-sense. But the same suggestions are good if it is foreign country?
Now the savings mindset also is a problem. Hmm...

Trend among indian companies..is tht thy need employees to stretch their work late night and weekends...making employees vulnerable to such attacks. Will ask employees not to follow this trend...safety and family is first..then employment.

Look after your own safety
by Tom Dick on Mar 16, 2015 08:49 AM  | Hide replies

Be it in India, Europe,USA,Australia or wherever you are, it is important to look after your own safety. There is no point in blaming politicians or law enforcement department or whatever as drug addicts, drunkards, thieves and a whole lot of anti social elements are out there all over the world. So all we can do is to take care of yourself by avoiding trouble spots, late night walking, walking alone etc.

Right. Sensible thing to do. Being reckless and blaming govt is not good.

Parramatta is not Sydney. It is a suburb 60 km west of Sydney.

Sydney CBD is very safe.

well said. Indian media projects as if this country is totally unsafe for women, they have nothing better to do than increase their TRP.

In India, in the metros like Mumbai, Pune, Hyd it is fine to return late from work and still be safe. Walk your way.

In Sydney, particularly the suburb where she was, it is highly unsafe to walk after 8 PM. You can see people lying around in the park, drunk or drugged, asking for money. If you dont give some can get aggressive and pull out knife or gun.

May be she was just too ignorant of these facts and continued her culture of late working hours of India. That cost her life. Additionally countries like US, Aus you got to have a car. Pedestrians are very few. So there is always more risk of getting caught in such situations.

Agree, same in the UK too. Don't walk through isolated places. It is very risky.

It is always safe to be back home before dark particularly when you are in an unknown country living with unknown people. Really you can not anticipate attacks like this. Be always watchful
