When I came to Kolkata in 1969 with SSLC qualification from a Tamil Medium, I faced the same problem. I enhanced my English knowledge by reading English newspapers and listening to English news. If one can try, learning English is not a problem

ENGLISH VINGLISH

this definitely is a very good article and many congratulations to you Santosh. But I would like to dissipate my opinion and a request to you Santosh. Today we are considering english as standard symbol for any individual. but we are forgetting that it is a language to communicate. This is ONE single common language which has been made important throughout the world as international language. One should definitely learn it and master it. But it should not warrant mockery towards any individual who has not MASTERED it. If someone has learnt it enough to communicate then it should be appreciated and not tested unless untill required to do so. This language has been accepted by the world because this was the language of the British who once ruled the world. Today the standard of this language has been drifted far from the original. Too many slangs, too many mixtures of accents from other languages. I really do not understand as to why we should keep on changing the standard. If Mojito is pronounced as Mohito, The fault is not with speaker but with the language. One should not adapt to such deviations in the language, so as to later laugh on someone who speaks as the way he learnt it. Even today the chinese have not entirely adopted the English. There are pros & cons of this but the fact is that they communicate what is required and that is sufficient. Not like here where we ridicule the so called UNMASTERED. Please do further efforts where we can comfortably speaks what is as

The Chinese haven't mastered the English language and they are getting mocked internationally for that. I remember an incident in China. During an interaction with one of the top physicists there, who could speak English with difficulty, some one asked a question on his brief presentation on a certain subject. He answered with the words "may be" without knowing the actual meaning of the word.Everybody in the audience got embarrassed by his response. But after the interpreter clarified the matter, we could realize that his Physics was ok but not English. This was the situation in the late 90's, but now the Chinese also are learning English seriously as they have to learn lessons the hard way during several international conferences, meets etc.

Congrats Santhosh! Your affinity for the English Language and sincere efforts & hard work are the reasons for your success... Well done boy! I have been an average student in my school & college studies but it is purely due to my love for English and good communication in English I was able to reach a very good level in my career. It is also true that with Good English communication , many with average level of studies have reached high levels in their career while people who have had many degrees but lacked English proficiency are still struggling in their careers. Surely English as a language for livelihood have helped many. it is sad but true that children & youth in cities, small towns & villages who try to learn English or speak in English are termed as 'Peter'. Kudos to you Santosh, All the best for more and more success in your life! Good article Rediff.....
