Do we need a Civil Service?
by utpal gohain on Jul 08, 2015 12:11 AM  | Hide replies

Why should Renu Raj not chose IAS over a medical career? In this bloody country a 25-30 year old IAS can become District Magistrate (aka Deputy Commissioner) and sit at the head of a conference table in District Development Committee meetings and lord it over doctors, engineers, veterinarians, educationists. Everyone Sir Sirs or Yes Madam,Yes Madam. A stupid system where a mere youth is considered to be master of all subjects over experienced professionals. Forget about PWD, Education, Health and other departments, even Central Public Sector Undertakings like ONGC, Indian Oil and NTPC are run by IAS with others doing the donkey\\\'s work. But all leading world powers like USA, Germany, Japan, Korea do not have a Civil Service system. They are true democracies. Every state and city in US has independent elected representatives like Governor, Mayor to run the civic services. The Civil Service is a legacy of the British Raj.

Well put - it is similar to why we have Administrators running the BCCI when veterans like Sunny & Kapil Dev are made to do Commentator duties !!

Congratulations for clearing IAS with flying colours. But let us discuss few basic points. Is it jusficable for a medical graduate to abandon medical profession. Government have spent so much money for her medical studies, so that she could serve the village folks and provide medical facilities in the rural areas. But waht she has done, just abruptly ended her medical profession and going to civil services. Really if she has urge to do Civil services she should have selected any arts subject and compete for civils and gave chance to other girl. Government have to formulate a policy on professional students competing to civil services.

exactly, remember it is a loss of seat for a person who must have lost it by a single mark to her.
This is not correct...

Kerala always had the highest standards for Medical education. It is not about losing by one mark but the admissions ensures that the best and brightest only come to the government medical colleges. We would really need the best and brightest in all fields to come to Civil Services. The country is run by the services. We want well educated, idealist and patriotic leaders to come into this and really make a difference in our country

Point taken.. but I think her background in medicines will help her be a better administrator. Also by the same logic ..a lot of women chose to look after their families giving up on professional goals.. it does not mean they have wasted a professional seat..all the knowledge and experience gained will come handy to them..

why do we need a MBBS for a IAS, it is national waste.. we can rather do commerce, i think that's better opition.
Yes if she gets medical profile in her IAS job, it will be awesome, else it is national waste, we lost a MBBS seat.
