Our family Doctor (still we have a family Doctor in Chennai) is 70 and had been consulting from home. Doesn't believe in suggesting various tests and all that. Due to renovation of his house, he started consulting in a hospital that had come up around the same time. This is where his (the Doctor's) headache began.
The Hospital wanted him to charge more than 5 times what he used to take as fee. He had his own set of patients consulting him for many years.
With this twist in his own profession, most of his patients stopped consulting him. He says that though he isn't worried about the revenue, he is more worried about the general condition of the patients (few of them visit him in case of urgency in the condition).
The hospital wants him to prescribe all sorts of tests as mentioned by some readers in their hospital stories above.
Poor man, he is going through stress to keep up his ethics.
Health care has become a big business. Doctors today decide based on reports only - no logic, no experience. That is the sad state of affairs.
There are few good doctors around. We should be lucky enough to be treated by such people.
