I went to Matheran for a day in 1972 and 1985. Both time we walked up and took the train back to Neral. On the second visit, while climbing up to Matheran, we could see all the lower areas covered by some clouds, probably smog. I wonder what the situation is now.

smog? Ever heard of smoke or mist? It happens in cold and moist conditions. Smog happens in industrialized / urban areas where there is a lot of smoke, not in hill stations.
