The govt could easily supply, online, return forms that are pre-filled with data from Form 26AS. The taxpayer could edit this information. This would be beneficial to all concerned. Or does the IT dept want to make money from these mistakes?

For this purpose, it might be necessary to include some more details in Form 26AS which would not be difficult.
