IIT grad who couldn't afford newspapers
by R Chakravarti on Aug 07, 2015 09:53 AM

It is good that this individual and his family were uplifted but the IITs can only cater to a small number. The governments (central and state) should concentrate on improving all the universities and colleges.

I studied at IIT Kanpur in the 1970s. A cobbler used to sit under a tree at our hostel entrance. His son, a teenager (or young man) was with him sharing the work. Sometimes this cobbler repaired my footwear. One day his son wasn't there and the father said he had run away! I hope he found a better job and helped his family.

Obviously, IIT didn't help them much except provide a tiny income from a few customers.

And let not the poison of bias and prejudice touch you remotely ever (as it invariably does the majority of your brethren in North India) !
