formula is (N/2)*(N 1)=276, now calculate for N Here N*(N 1)= 276*2 i.e. N*(N 1) = 552, now find out the multiples of 552, which are adjacent i.e. 23 and 24, so the answer is 23

absolutely..this is the only 'mathsy solution', but i guess there is a reason rediff presented its solution the way it did, for non-math people....but uh i believe you meant 'positive divisors' of 552, not multiples. i added the 'positive' there, because the equation is quadratic in N and has two solutions(23 & -24), the extraneous solution(negative integer) is discarded.

of course what is also saddening is rediff has swallowed all your 'plusses', and apparently it even auto-deleted your post and later had it reinstated.

this is more to do with 'technique' than intelligence. f.ex. i could get my computer to iterate over the range [1,31] to get all solutions in a split second: (first column is number of days,in the month second column is leaves collected, you can see 23 corresponds to 276)
