the facts are nicely stated, but the article also appears biased...for instance, what message is the writer trying to give when she calls Sushmita erudite...? up until now, Aishwarya's interviews seem to have far more substance & well-articulate....there was also to some extent the benefit of question posed to the two ladies...any question related to culture/ heritage of India appears more weighty and serious than a personal question like choosing one's partner based on a TV sitcom...& as far as the body is concerned, i agree that Sushmita had a great body as per the parameters of the contest & otherwise as well...she should have won the Miss ten title...but saying that sushmita was better in terms of overall performance in the Miss India contest doesn't seem convincing at all.
I remember I could not afford to buy femina those days, but I read them on hire at the local bookstalls, and I followed the show religiously. All said and done I have been a Sushmita fan right from day one. I don't consider success in films as a big markup but she has dared which very few real women would have done. She has adopted 2 baby girls being a single mom and what a way she is bringing them up. She is still a leading lady. Whereas, Ash being just beautiful physically is just a pretty plastic picture, nothing for anyone to follow. Thanks Sathya mam, for the inside picture.

Isn't the films and media all about? creating an image that's not real and make you believe that they are out of this world. Foolishly, we all fall in trap else why would anyone be interested in blindly following them.
Well said about the pros and cons and about variuous issues associated with the contests. Let me summarize it in one single point. About the time when these Indian ladies became beauty pagents, I remember seeing an article with a caption photo. The photo was enough to bring out the mood- it was that Aishwaria Rai and Sushmita Sen were enjoying their moments while there was one person who was laughing in the background and lending a pose of blessing over them. That person was Dr Manmohan Singh , the then Finance Minister. This unfortunately wa the truth that it was around this time that Indian economy was opened up for foreign brands and the fallout was such winners. IOnce the market stabilized , the winners were no longer to be seen. If the idea of tall blue eyed blondes winning was to be believed, Women from African nations would never have won . But they did as the beuty brands now require to enter these markets

that's an interesting point of view. i wonder if nobel prize also got affected because of Modi's high octane publicity & invitation.

Yeah. It was well recognised those days itself that its all about capturing emerging markets. Thats why Indians and south Americans were winning those days. And going by the surge in sales of beauty products, the investment made by them was worth every penny.
