Re: Man hole round

Manholes are round because for any other shape, it would be possible to push the lid inside the hole. If it is rectangle or square, the lid can fall into it, if one side is pushed along the diagonal of the hole. Triangle can also be put with some rotation. But circular lids can never go inside the circular manhole if lid is little bigger than the hole. That is the reason it is circular. and this is not at all a stupid question.

if rectangle lid are bigger than the hole, same thing, your answer doesnt make sense. BTW all water sumps have rectangle lid

You are wrong. Rectangular lid will fall into the rectangular hole if put sideways. Try it with a paper if u cant visualize.

You can not topple down it .i.e. cover of the manhole will never slip inside the manhole. In case it is of other shape it can slip.

Square or Rectangle Manholes are made round for the reason, square / Rectangle were getting cracked at the corners due to centrifugal force while round shape centrifugal force is distributed equally hence do not get cracked at the corners.
