I am a civil engineer.never comment these places. This time I do as most of you'll aren't either getting completely correct or only partially. A few reasons mentioned are valid to certain extent but the main reason is as follows - point wise :

Manholes are square, recatangular and triangle too!
by sanjay agarwal on Nov 26, 2014 12:26 AM

Its a stupod question. The Manhole covereps are square, rectangle and triangle too. Its in our mind that we have it round only as its to cover a hole which is round!!

manhole is round

in manufacturing a circular plate you have to take care of two dimensions thickness and dia. ,while if its a square or rectangular plate its 3 dimensions (l b h). It also gives maximum surface area to enter with same quantity of material to make the lid.

A circular cover can never accidentally fall inside the hole as the diameter of the cover is greater than that of the hole. But sqaure or rectangular shaped cover can fall inside.

It easier to give round shape rather than making four or three corners. A round shaped rim will have a better grip on the concrete filling of its cover and will be easier to carry up to the manhole.

That is not right. It is round for the simple reason that the lid cannot drop into the manhole - no matter how one tries to. That is not possible with rectangular/square. The lid can be dropped into the manhole if dropped in sideways.

You may also consider the surface area of a Manhole circle to that of a square man hole.

The reason is simple - Manhole can be easily moved on the roads (like tyre since its round in shape)

Since it is a hole it has to be round otherwise it would have been called man-square; man-rectangle; man-triangle, man pentagon, man-hexagon, man-oxagon etc.,

The real question is why is it called a MAN-hole and not a WOMAN-hole?
