What is the basis of your comments re ill effect? Ihv been taking them for long without any ill effect. I alternate them e.g saccharine withe sucralose. Avoid aspertame when possible. All the sweeteners are FDA tested and not as harmful as suggested. Anything in excess is harmful including any medicine which are commonly taken/prescribed. Problem of example of cola is because it contains too much of sweetener equivalent to several spoonful of sugar and drunk in plenty. Restricted intake will not be harmful.

Of late, a new usage is coined - motivated research- interested parties get 'research reports' to further their business. Who knows, this is not such a report, aimed at safeguarding sugar sales? so wait until rediff publish another study favouring artificial sweeteners!

Today patient is really confused. On one day we read recommendation for one particular product and second day lot of negative effects publish for the same product which was being recommended till yesterday.
I am diabetic and using artificial sweetener since last one decade and feel proud that my all food items including sweet are made with artificial sweetener. But this recent research speaks some thing dangerous and make patient more confused.

Such articles will keep coming. Dont worry. Remember - sugar is the biggest killer today, more than tobacco and it was even recommended by WHO that sugar should be sold with statutory warning. So you gave up sugar - very good. Use atificial sweetners but avoid 'aspertine' Fo example Sugar Free GOLD - avoid but SUGAR FREE Sucralose you can have. Have Splenda but avoid aspertine based sweetners. Enjoy, cheers and have a healthy life

In a country like India, where health related awareness is minimum or even nil, it becomes necessary for the Health Ministry to take active interest in the benefit of its citizens. The concerned ministry must put strict rules for the ingredients alongwith health signals on products. At a later stage, the health of the citizens suffer seriously and the treatment becomes costly- both for the individuals & also the government.

You think that people in the United States strictly eat everything after looking looking at the nutritional values. If that were true, 30 percent of Americans will not be very obese, and another 35 percent of them somewhat over-weight.
