Life in Villages
by Kathir Krishnamurthi on Jul 02, 2014 06:12 PM

We have enjoyed all this.. not far from cities.. Kids love space and farm animals... Every summer I sepnt with my aunts was like what you have described. In order to appreciate it fully, one needs to work like the villagers...

best things in life

We as children enjoyed such things right where we lived!There was always a lake at the edge of town, often overflowing in season; a mango grove where we could go and pluck the mangoes and eat ( and at times get bitten by those special red ants);there was always a wooded area where we could go watch or chase those little birds whose names we did not even know. leave the town ,and the edge you could get a ride on a bullock cart, carrying sugarcane or something and you could help yourself to some!it was something special as the village roads were untarred and you could enjoy all those bumps, big and small! Now,'Development' has overtaken us.Greenery has disappeared (except as name of some odd apartment)Birds have stopped coming. Even the stars seem reluctant to show themselves up in the night sky.Our children are now well dressed,pampered. But where do they get to see how a cow is milked, how the calf feeds, the sweet smell of jaggery as it boils, the pleasure of plucking groundnuts , roasting them on straw and eating fresh! Our children hardly know nature as it is! Oliver Goldsmith sang long ago:
Yes! let the rich deride,the proud disdain
These simple blessings of the lowly train;
To me more dear,congenial to my heart
One native charm than all the gloss of art.
Spontaneous joys where nature has its play
The soul adopts and owns their first born sway;
Lightly the frolic over the vacant mind
Unenvied,unmolested,unconfined.

The best things of life

What a pity that this generation has to go far away from home to see nature and get in touch with some of its nice aspects! We enjoyed such things where we were, 30-40 years ago in most smaller towns. There was always a lake at the edge of town,a mango grove where as children we could go pluck mangoes , mostly on the sly) and eat;wooded areas nearby where we could go and watch or chase mynas and other birds,etc. Once we left the town edge, we could walk in any direction and we would hit mostly untarred village roads where we could get a ride on bullock carts, carrying sugar cane or some other stuff, eating some on the way! Now we are 'Developing'. All the greenery is gone; birds no more sing; even the stars do not seem to like showing up at night- we can no more see the twinkling stars in the night sky in most towns and cities! But there is a compensation: cities may be proud that night clubs are open even beyond midnight! Oliver Goldsmith wrote long ago:
Yes, let the rich deride,the proud disdain
these simple blessings of the lowly train.
To me more dear,congenial to my heart
One native charm, than all the gloss of art.
Spontaneous joys where Nature has its play
The soul adopts and owns their first born sway
Lightly they frolic over the vacant mind
Unenvied,unmolested,unconfined.
But the long pomp, the midnight masquerade
With all the freaks of wanton wealth arrayed
The heart distrusting, asks if this be joy!

Yes. Best things in life are free. But as you said, you have to go to Purushwadi. Where is Purushwadi & how far is it from Bombay and how much it costs to reach Purushwadi. In Purushwadi best things are free but worst thing is that reaching Purushwadi is costly. We had all these just all around and we ruined all these best things, in the name of false development. Lallu Prasad said "can your computer give milk". But I ask "can our pseudo development give trees around Cities"? NO That is our development and the price we pay to reach Purushwadis.
