Bajaj scooter was not available to common purchaser unless ON. PREMIUM was paid. It continued for years. Excise duty, and ALL government taxes were paid on ex-factory price and vehicle was sold in market for premium. No questions asked to COMPANY for this pricing. WHY?, everybody's guess.

That was a time of the License Raj when companies had a permssion to manufacture only a certain number of products. naturally after the company sold it owners sold their scooters to those in need for a higher sum
i have a 1992 chetak still working in fine condition. it is a very good vehicle for short distance travel with in city, long distance travel in for any two wheeler is not safer anymore anywhere in india due to day by day increasing volume of traffic. some time feel to replace it for more economical options but don't prefer due to negligible amount on its maintenance.
Its high time to bring back M80 kind of scooter with foot gears and more power. Any market oriented 2 wheeler AUTO company should immediately bring such product to enjoy success in BIG way as there is no competition in this category right now.
I have Bajaj Chetak since 1994. It is still a lovely scooter with practically no-maintenance. Milage? It still gives 42 Kms per litre. I have decided to go for a motorbike the day it stops workingperforming. But it is still going strong. I enjoy riding my Chetak even today. I am still not able to understand why Bajaj Auto stopped Manufacturing it? It would be always a welcome model if re-launched with whatever up-gradations that needs to be done (if and only if Bajaj Auto feels)

probably due to bs-ii, bsiii compliance. 2 Stroke engines are no more manufactured
Those days are golden era of scooter Bajal, LML Vespa, Lamby and so on...
But now city roads are chock-a-block with two wheelers. In the last 2 months at least 4 people known to me met with bike accidents of varying fatalities.
90% of the riders don't wear helmets or any safety gear. I get worried everytime a bike-wallah passes by my car on the road.
I know its all about business and money, but there should be sanity on our roads. We cannot have so many bikes swarming the streets and roads.
I drove chetak for 12 years. I have one with me now also. Classic. Its still nice and avgs 50kmpl. I really love driving geared scooter. But I like atleast 150CC and self start.

I have Bajaj 150 of 1972 still running well. I feel Bajaj should againg come out with Scooters. Their product was value for money.
I own a 1998 Chetak Scooter that is running fine still and giving a mileage of 55-60 Kms per litre with very little maintenance expenditure. Regional Transport Dept was kind enough to renew the registration of vehicle after 15 years for another 5 years seeing the fit condition of vehicle. I wonder why Bajaj had discontinued this vehicle?

The 2-stroke engine can be made to conform to current emission standards by the use of direct fuel injection or stratified charge, possibly together with a catalytic converter. Bajaj themselves still make the RE 2-stroke rickshaw and TVS the Scooty Teenz and XL Heavy Duty. There is no technical reason why the Chetak could not be re-introduced.
I have many a fond memories of years spent on the back of a chetak that an older cousin had bought.I was 5 years old and due to an age gap he was 19.He was my unofficial driver to drop me to school and pick me up.
