As far as I know dowry syatem started in India when Portugese Royals gifted Bombay as dowry to British Prince.
Earlier norm was Boys side will give some money to girl's parents for giving away the girl.
So British and Portugese started dowry system in India. Am I correct? Or there was dowry system from girls side to boys side earlier?

Indians are champions of excuses when they commit errors. If 51 percent of the women will call off their marriage if dowry were demanded, then India has evolved.
Educated or uneducated, I am sorry to say that would try to take handsome dowry from their parental house because of social pressure and to escape harassment later at their in laws place. There are unfortunately a very minute percentage of people who willingly refuse dowry. There are a few people who do not demand but expect a fat dowry.Involved children also would make their marriage a memorable affair. It is a materialistic world after all and irrespective of the burden to be carried by parents, children expect their marriage to be lavish. It is really difficult to arrange a marriage where there is a control on expenses.
Only 50% of the educated internet savvy girls who would account to less than 100 million in total population say that they would cancel the marriage. Now consider the vast majority of illiterate girls and what they would say?
