As a woman who has been travelling alone for years, I agree with the author. It is better to be paranoid than careless. In my experience most people are harmless, but it may just be your bad luck to cross the path of the criminal,so better be safe.

1) before you board the cab, ask someone to note the number of the cab in full view of the cabbie and let the person look at the face as well. If you were at a party or meeting , you can ask someone there. If thats not possible, you can ask building security to do this for you. one with criminal intention will hold back if he thinks someone can identify him other than you.

2) Be alert. As the author said, keep phone calls short. Dont sleep off. If cabbie takes wrong turn, insist on going back to the main road. If he is not a bad guy, he will definitely oblige. if he doesnt listen, he is bad guy and do whatever to defend yourself. I suggest open window and start shouting

Singapore laws
by Amit Sharma on Dec 13, 2014 07:27 PM  | Hide replies

This is the message foreign embassies communicates to its citizen who travels to Singapore. Unless India has strict laws, nothing will change. Along strict punishment, awareness, social campaign, movements, promotion of family values, marriage at right time is key. The problems in india are plenty and options limited

We advise you to exercise normal safety precautions in Singapore.
Exercise common sense and look out for suspicious behaviour, as you would in Australia.
Penalties for drug offences in Singapore are severe and include the death penalty.
Singapore laws on “outrage of modesty” (such as men behaving inappropriately towards women, using inappropriate language and inappropriate touching) are strict. Penalties include imprisonment, fines, and/or corporal punishment (caning).
Driving while drunk could get you 10 years in prison in Singapore! Don't drink and drive, it really is a serious offence there
Racial harmony is carefully promoted. Racial slurs, such as those you might hear in football chants could actually wind you up in jail, or getting caned.
Caning is in practice always ordered in addition to a jail sentence and never as a punishment by itself. It is administered in an enclosed area in the prison, out of view of the public and other inmates. Those present are limited to the inmate, prison wardens, medical officers, the caning officer and sometimes high-ranking prison officials to witness the punishment.

Caning is not school caning. If people see videos of caning in Singapore on youtube, you will realise it bleeds very badly and thick fore skin of the skin comes out. Three canes can cause amount of pain as big as bullet injury. Singapore gives strictest punishment to law breakers specially rapist.

India - A land of Men who are basically street Dogs
by lee on Dec 12, 2014 01:29 AM  | Hide replies

Indian men if given an open hidden opportunity, they will grab anytthing that is se-x type. Such is the attitude of men here. And then they point that the woman was drunk blah blah... Why can't a woman be drunk, it is relaxing sometimes, are Indian women prisioners that they cannot drink, wear jeans and be independent in life. Pathetic Indian mentality rather street dog mentlaity.

Midnight taxi
by aparna jain on Dec 12, 2014 12:35 AM

My train got delayed n somehow my pickup guy was not available so i had to take a cab from ndls to home in indirapuram. The thought of taking up a room at station or just sitting at platform till dawn also crossed my mind. But then i thot i can do this. So called in a cab. Turned on my gps latitude. Shared that with my sister n we kept texting. Also made a few calls to let the driver kno that ppl know where exactly i m.. again as in article.. police patrol vehicles did give me a sense of relief too.. finally i reached my destination n paid off the cabby. It was almost a daring thing for me as this was the first time i ever hired a cab in delhi all alone at almost midnight. When i told my mom later after reaching home she was in tears! I said its fine. M fine. M strong n brave n intelligent plus had my sister tracking me over latitude. Thanks to technology!

I do feel the anguish and sense of loss of independence that most girls and women face due to these crimes against women. Unfortunately, we live in a country where the police has the resources to search for a lost pet dog of a minister but has no time for providing safety to ordinary citizens. The politicians only pay lip service to women's safety for their families have Zplus safety anyways. Law abiding honest citizens fear the police as police harass them for getting hafta. Howeve, criminals have no fear as they know that police can be bought with money, very cheap.
I think common people should do mass protests regularly and make life tough for the politicians by blocking their movement daily to make them wake up and come out of their comfort zone.
