Rediff has put up a nice article after a long time....
Present day generation question everything that is told to them as some belief/ritual/tradition, where as they dont think even for a second the logic behind it...
Every belief/tradition/festival/ritual has got some scientific reaoning or at least simple common sense behind it...
it is an good article. even there is a story that cutting peeple tree is bad luck, but it was spread because this tree gives lot of oxygen that too for 24 hrs. so to avoid cutting of the tree, it was told as bad luck and to worship.

Hey You - This was India's Map before Your Christianity & Islam invaded India.
It is not a superstition , it is a logic. Walking under a ladder means walking thorough a narrow area. One passing under the ladder risk injury by falling, tools or other items from top. On can dislodge the footing of the ladder and the person working on the top could fall and sustain lifetime injury. How would you like to walk under a ladder wearing a expensive suit and dislodging the ladder with a tin of paint falling directly on you, I don't think you will like it or will you. Not walking under a ladder is a Health and Safety aspect and not a superstition. It is just to avoid accidents.
Re: Superstition or logic? Why you shouldn't walk under a ladder!

I think nobody will walk under the ladder when there is other space available. The superstition is when you dont have a way and have to pass under the ladder.
of course all the superstitions started when somebody experienced something after doing some particular activity, like someone may have got hurt while going under the ladder and could have told other people, in simple words, that it will be bad for you to go under the ladder.

Not only bad for the person walking under as some thing could fall on the person walking under a ladder. Think of the person working on the ladder that will get knocked down if one happens to push the ladder or shake it accidentally. Person on top has a very slim chance of not getting injured or may be finish up in hospital for a long time. It is no bad luck to walk under a ladder it is a safety reason.
Boiling milk is a more common superstition and can be explained as a warning to the person managing the kitchen that you should not waste a food item in such a careless way - plus mess to clean up.
