Should India worry about its poor form?

We should see the performance of universities/IITs in the parameters of fulfilling the national and institutional objectives.
IITs and other Central/State universities should project their output and achievements of the last 2o years in their relevant fields. It should be available on their website.
We are not serious about innovations.

IIT Rankings

It is quite clear that Western educational institutions do not care for rankings such as are in question here when it comes to selecting students from IITs, IISc etc., for graduate admissions and Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Almost all students of IIT/Kanpur, for example, used to be offered admission to graduate studies by Ivy League universities because they were sure the students were among the very best candidates they could get globally. IIT JEE was considered an epitome of testing, and what enabled aspirants to get through the test was considered more important than what they learnt at the IITs. Institutions should be ranked by the calibre of the students who manage to gain admission to them.

It does not make sense to rank institutions on the basis of calibre of students. Are you ranking the students or the university? I think the parameters considered in the current ranking system are totally fair. If anything, they should increase the contribution of research and citation factor and remove the factor of reputation (or hype). Secondly, no test (IIT-JEE or otheriwse)can ever test the "calibre" of a human being. IIT-JEE is just one test - performance (which can be luck) in IIT-JEE does not tell any person's calibre. Indians need to give up glamor and hype (associated with IITs) and worry about honest performance. The question should what is the output of the university - how does the university add to a student's abilities (and not what the student already brought with him/her beforehand).

Get rid of the quota in staff recruitment, reservations in student enrollment and bring only merit as the criteria , Only then we will see the difference and Some of our institutions would out rank some of the world's best.

In an educated and wealthy society, quota impact on merit will be negligible

I think, people are misunderstanding/misconceiving/bad mouthing about quota and pointing fingers as if for every other issue cause is same

Western companies followed quota system over a long period of time for importing Garments. It is followed only to mute the competition and giving opportunities for other countries, India was one of the country benefited through such a quota system, even today India could not compete with China in the Garment exports, do you think what we produce is a cheaper quality than China?

People should look at the Quota system in a holistic way in a multidimensional to understand the underlying purpose/concepts and should not look at from one directional/dimensional and make wrong assumptions

Quotas should be up to 25% only and not 75% and above as practiced in some of our states. I don't think that in states which give 75% reservations, 75% of the population is backward. Further, some of the Institutes should be insulated from this system

Its true merit should only be sole criteria for selection. We ourselves have spoiled these institutions.
