Onam Celebrations
by gopalakrishnan caruthedath on Sep 15, 2013 11:30 AM

There are many such activities which are praacticed in several parts of Kerala. The festivities keep changing within a distance of say 20 to 30 km apart. Nevertheless,it was a reasonably good attempt to explain to the outside world how Onam got evolved and how the same is celebrated. Good attempt.

In furtherance to all those best Ms. Nair, there are Boat race which Nehruji adored. In the inner parts of Kerala, there are several competitions which locals eagerly wait. Like Onam Thallu (hitting each other), then there is Bull race.

Of course this article is well written. Congratulations to Rediff. Keep it up.

Heartiest Greetings and Happy ONAM to all Keralites.

According to me this is the greatest festival where people from all walks of life, irrespective of caste and religion join hands in making this festival truly enjoyble.

Kerala is a fine example of religious tolerance, thank you brothers and sisters.

In Kerala, religious differences are barely conspicuous. And while religious identities still remain distinct, they rarely ever stand out starkly unlike the case in most other Indian states.

So, religious tolerance is no big deal in Kerala - it has always been part of life (though some vested interests keep hoping to cause some fissures and derive benefits from them).

Religious tolerance might look a gigantic virtue in some other states - especially in many north Indian ones. But it is such an integral part of life in Kerala that the fact that there is very less tolerance in many other parts of India comes as a great surprise to many Keralites.
