False Ranking
by Dipak Bose on Oct 23, 2013 09:16 PM

Rankings are done by some British newspapers like The Times, The Guardian, The Financial times. They put all Anglo-American universities at the top and then a few Chinese, Japanese here and there. Universities in other parts of the world including the Indian Universities do not take part in that game.
The criteria is either money, citations, no of papers published, but never about the how strong are the syllabus, method of examination, toughness of gradations, quality of the teachers.
Thus, this Ranking is a marketing tool for the Anglo-American universities to get more fee-paying foreign students. It is a big business.

I have compared the Syllabus of the Punjab University with that of Calcutta University in a few important subjects.

The syllabus of the Masters Degree courses in Mathematics/Economics/Physics/ in Punjab University is comparable to the Bachelors(Honours) degree courses in Calcutta University.

No wonder after having Masters Degree from Punja University MonMhan Singh had to repeat the Bachelors Degree in Britain.

Such is the academic standard of the Punjab University.

University ranking
by True Voice on Oct 15, 2013 10:01 AM  | Hide replies

A portion of earlier rediff article given below.
"The improvement in rankings for Indian universities has come about as they “co-operated with Thomson Reuters, providing their data for analysis”. Thomson Reuters collects, analyses and verifies data, independently of Times Higher Education, which publishes the results."
Many of the universities in India are not so keen on providing these data because they are not expecting much flow of foreign students and thus foreign currency. Whereas Universities in US / UK are so keen on ranking because their existence is mainly with the support of international students who keep looking for ranking

In Europe and US Education is one area free from external interference and influence and that is one reason that these Universities are attracting brilliant students across Globe.

It would be an eye opening to others to improve their performance. In stage wise Govt should put it's efforts to free Universities from Campus elections and politics to ensure enough time available for academics and decency in campuses. No doubt resistance is expected from politically backed student unions, but in larger interest gradually Universities should be freed from clutches of politicians.

Ranking to PU Chandigarh
by Suram Verma on Oct 14, 2013 02:34 PM  | Hide replies

It is great that PU has achieved this recognition. Hard work done by its faculty, staff and students has really paid off. It is really nice to know that Dept. of Physics has 140 and Chemistry has about 80 research scholars enrolled. It is only the research scholars who modulate the ideas of faculty into publications. I wish further success to university and its people under the able guidance of a Physicists Prof. Grover. Administrators of other university of the country should take a lesson from success of PU and should try to imbibe such an academic atmosphere in their respective universities. Good research work and that also in collaboration is always get recognized all over the world. Faculty should stick to good research work instead of short cuts and easy going outcomes. They should utilize, motivate and explore the potential of research scholars to the best without making their (research scholars) life difficult.
