IMAGES: Chugging through the wild beauty of the Western Ghats

While the route is certainly picturesque, the train itself is attrociously bad and so is the service in the train. Nothing available for eating. One has to get off at the Stations and search for the catering, which if luck is bad could be at the other end of the platform. The carriages are all in terribly bad condition. Most seats in the AC Chaircar are broken. Many of them do not have proper back rests and food trays are tied with strings as the holding clamps are all broken. My experience of this train was absolutely bad. The scenic beauty of the 58 m was the only saving grace.

Unfair comment. During British times there were four classes of travel: First, second, inter and third. No fans or cushions in third class. Air conditioning was by use of ice blocks and meant only for white people. Now you can book your ticket on line without moving out of your room, travel in air conditioned comfort in a fast train, no need to change trains for journey, your ticket includes meals. I recall with horror the travails of yesteryears when reserving a ticket from Kanpur to Hyderabad meant a three day wait as a telegram was to be sent to Jhansi from Kanpur. Journey from Kanpur to Jhansi was by cattle class, suspense until reaching Jhansi about confirmed reservation.
Now we have ISO certified trains. If we still feel some discomfort please remember how the population is growing.

I recollect that old era when onward reservations were done by sending telegrams to the cooresponding station.
My father had booked for us for a Miraj to Madgaon journey, from Mumbai. On arrival at Miraj station, we were told that they did not get any telegram, hence no booking. Finally we had to travel in an Unreserved compartment - for a whole night journey. Even after 40 years, that is still the worst journey we ever had.
Thanks to new electronic reservation, we are absolutely sure about a reserved seat.

Konkan railway is for the benefit of pouring north Indian migrants directly into the Konkan.

India still lives in this nature. I wish that this should not be spoiled by us - Let our future generations enjoy it
