The tradition of arranging the dolls in tiers (known as koluvu in Telugu and Kolu or Golu in Tamil) goes back to generations when all the dolls were made by the members of the family. The dolls used to be made over a period of one year and kept safe until the start of the ten day festival. Much thought was spent for an imaginative display, with dolls arranged to depict village scenes or traditional games and tableaus. In the nineties idols of Hindu deities imported from Germany became popular, now supplanted by our giant neighbour China!
