Traditionally the plankton leaf is placed with the narrow end (tongue) to the left. There is a practical reason. Rice is eaten mashing and making into small lumps. While mashing and while eating payasam in a traditional way,i.e taking it on palm and then licking palm (taste-buds to sense sweetness are on the periphery, and so this method is ideal) the forceful touch on the leaf by palm is a push away towards right-side. That being the case, the chance of leaf getting torn is reduced if you place the leaf with tongue to the left. Those who know the structure of leaf and those who have eaten in leaf will agree.

In my childhood, there was a guest control act and restriction on menu in which you cannot invite more than a certain number of guests or serve food items. This act should be brought back to ensure lavish spending and wastage of food.
