Around Diwali their was a function at school, first thing in assembly after prayers was to have two minute silence, in remembrance of some public leader or diseased person associated with school.
I was having a cracker in my pocket, which could explode with pressure, on seeing everyone around with closed eyes, I took the cracker out from my pocket and start playing with it. I did not intended to blew the cracker but while juggling, it went off in pin drop silence.
One teacher came up to me, took me to the front while holding my ear and make me bend over, next to the chief guest.
After a while they were giving prizes to children, who excelled in academics, sports, arts and other things. I was not remembering that I might get a prize for academic achievement.
Soon Principal announced my name on loud speaker, children and teachers start looking around in each other lines, ready to greet the bright child with claps.
After announcing my name few times, when no child came forward, my class teacher came to front and asked me to take the prize. When I stood up next to the knees of chief guest for taking the prize, instead of clapping many children started laughing.
After taking the prize, I again started to bend over next to the chief guest, on seeing this, more children started laughing, then Principal came up to me and told me to go back.
Divya: This is an extremely well-written article. It is very evocative and reminiscent and will bring on memories for anyone who reads it. The memories will not necessarily be connected with Diwali only but with every Diwali, Eid, Christmas etc. that anybody has been fortunate to spend with their families anywhere in the world. Thanks for bringing on the memories... :)
immediately after reading the article my first thought was to share some of my feelings of nostalgia evoked by divya. strangely the same feelings have already been expressed by previous readers. you took me back in time by 40-45 years, divya and i also re-lived my childhood. well written and gave me quite a few goose pimples. all the best for the future and enjoy equally your next diwali.
