PS3 did not fail as a console. Agreed the Xbox360 won the war initially because of the coolness factor, and it being made for the Western countries. The PS3 will always have a Japanese feel to it, however it came on top at the end. Wii catered to casual gamers, and hence would obviously outsell the costlier consoles.
PS Vita failed due to its price, removal of UMD, and everyone owning a smartphone, besides the lack of titles. All consoles are released with a few titles and more are released, depending upon the sale of the console.
PS1 and PS2 sold because of their prices, and also ability for people to hack them. The rumored $600 price of PS4 will be a deterrent. Also, if you make a relatively unhackable console like the PS3, it will turn off many buyers. Sony plans to stop exchange and re-selling of game titles like in the PS Vita and PSP Go, another factor that will deter many potential customers. Sony will have to walk the very thin line between pleasing the game developers and customers. If they go all the way with developers, they will lose customers, which will, in turn, turn away developers, as it happened with the PS Vita.
