Dont Blame just engineers
by Yashpal Gogia on Jun 10, 2013 10:42 AM

Dear professor, it is not just from IIT or any other engineer which are not giving you proper output. What type of work companies are expecting from them. Except in IT, other field no one is expecting ant innovation. Any intelligent product need time and money to be developed. companies are not interested in spending, might be because some resource and availability at low price in international market.Because multinational are earning from royalties and on the other hand Indian companies are earning from subcontracting.

IITs have to partly blame themslves for this mess.
by _ on Jun 10, 2013 10:16 AM

they could have left u/g teaching to universities and concentrated on post grads. the institute of technology tag is unnecessary when there are so many universities arounf the world inventing real technologies.

It may not be just sweating out!!
by Ashish on Jun 10, 2013 06:39 AM  | Hide replies

It may just not be sweating out. Shop floor guys are not paid at par with the so called white collar desk job guys. Also, wrong notion and now perception that you in long run people are not made to work on shop floor but in AC cabins making strategies. So, importan is that Industry is doing a lot of injustice to eople on shop floor and pampering the deskies or jobs in office tagging it as strategic / Management jobs.

No perspiration policy a government flaw!
by Rajendra Nayak on Jun 09, 2013 08:43 PM  | Hide replies

In lighter vein- when we can normally sweat in India why work on shop floor and get perspiration all over the body?
The Indian education system itself is at great fault. An engineering student where fees are subsidised is joining MBA and has totally forgotten his engineering subjects. A nuclear Physics student is an officer in a nationalised bank. There are thousands of mismatches. A large number of physicians have stopped practising medicine and are stock brokers, writers, film personalities too.
The educational policy is totally at flaw. There is no National wage policy after 65 years.
Is it an easy task to start an industry after being a technocrat? It is definitely a big "NO" to start an industry in India.
Large number of highly intelligent students have done IT as if it is going to change the industrial out put because salary is very good over there. Students who take up mechanical, electrical, civil are all laughed at as if it is a sin to do engineering in these subjects.

agree. also caste mentality of Indians is at fault. we chase labels. An IIT'ian is considered superior to a normal engineer...a doctor is superior to a dentist..a guy with a corporate pay package is superior to an entrepreneur who generates wealth..etc.

Our mentality is based on caste and heirarchy ..so we really need to free up our minds first.

Poor attitudes of the IITians
by ravi prakash on Jun 09, 2013 03:06 PM

The Coaching Factories are doing a marvelous business. These factories that send their products to the IITs. The coaching factories ensure that their students are put through the grind over two years only to clear the JEE. By the end of these two years, the student is too exhausted and worn out. The coaching factory achieves it objective of sending the product to the IIT but the damage that they do is incalculable. Once a student gets in he knows that the IIT will provide them with an engineering degree. A JEE clearing machine can do little else. Once in the IIT, the poor student sees in the IIT, a liberal space for doing anything and ends up doing nothing and getting away with a degree
It was reported that 70% of the students are plain bored of the engineering education- not interested in studying. At the end of the four years, sit for CAT for IIMs or GRE for a foreign University or the Civil Services competitive exams. Then take up a job.
It is the competitive exams that have determined the kind of jobs taken.
With every state having an IIT, its importance is fast eroding as those genuinely interested in Engineering and unable to get into the IITs can attend a reasonably good college near home and go for the engineering jobs.
The IITs may anguish over the poor attitude of their students so long as they continue selecting products from the coaching factories in India.

Dear Professor, Pls don't mislead young people. I am also an IITian. The fact is that you stand nowhere compare to the USA, UK Universities and their facility. In terms of faculties, well... if you pay peanuts you will only get monkeys.

Dear student,
Iit students are not as smart as they think they are.
They are not gods gift to india. In fact, most iit profs are ex iit themselves, that should give you an idea about your kind. Mugging in coaching centre for 2 yrs burning two lakhs of indulgent parents and expecting 25 lakh cushy job as birthright is the attitude of a typical student today, barring honourable exceptions. D not even compare yourselves againt mit, or israeli students. All you can create is college fests.

It is very disheartning if IITian talk like this, you shaould think of being an entrepreneurs rather then talking about peanuts and monkeys, I know IITians who have started their own firm and have created employment, if peanut and monkey is what you think why did you go to IIT or even did Engg, you could have earned peanuts without all this

we got to seriously think about reducing the number of seats in engineering colleges aajkall...most of them are not filled or filled up with un worthy characters...this in turn is spoiling the reputation of other good engineers too...doing an engg graduation is also more to do with attitude as there is no much big hype in technical subjects..i hv seen good tech minds in unpad people too... so attitude and professionalism will play good role...even engineers are not bothered that they are unworthy...but fight for life style? pathetic indian political situation... teachers are nightmare too...alas...when to change this

neither does govt finance the 'metallurgical engineering nor does the new generation want to leave the laptops and ACs!
All our minerals esp. Iron ore go to Japans and US to bacome engine blocks!
just like selling cotton and receiving polyester!

When I got my degree in civil engineering half a century back, there were no jobs for us. The education minister of USSR, who addressed us told us that they were unable to produce enough civil engineers to meet their country's requirements. He wondered why in a developing country like India engineers remain jobless. Actually, we belonged to a batch where the number of seats were greatly increased as the government foolishly thought that because of the border war with China, more engineers were needed. Metallurgy and chemical engineering branches were started to meet the war situation but only resulted in more unemployment. Fifty years later job prospects are no better for engineers to work as engineers.
