We need more tax revenues
by Rajesh Chheda on Jul 15, 2013 07:07 PM

Smokers are an integral part of economy. The amount of taxes that they directly contribute by smoking is equal to defence budget of India that allows the nation to sleep peacefully.
Smoking is bad for health but economic consequences can be equally drastic if smoking is banned.
Direct and indirect employment through cigarette and bidi industry is nearly 10 million. Where will govt put these people? Medical industry's revenue due to smoking will be billions of dollars in India alone. How will they recoup their losses? List of problems is endless. Solution if any has to be slow and steady which will avoid drastic bad effects.

Because govt. gets tax on these products.

Employers should not employ smokers. This will be a curb.
