VPN is an official connectivity available to employees to access office network. Most of the offices will not allow it on ur personal laptops. Not sure if it is such a great idea.

There are tons of free VPN services for personal use. A VPN does not necessarily has to be offered by employers.
The best thing to do if you are going to use your laptop to access the internet through a public wi-fi outlet is to create simple user account with no privileges on your laptop and access the internet through it!
Under no circumstances should you conduct ANY financial transactions through Public wi-fi!
There is no such thing as a "safe and secure" personal computer!
