Not easy to believe but.....

My wife settled for a lovely netted dark pink saree for the reception which cost less than Rs.3500 at Pothys (i believe). And she looked lovely and grand during our reception. However, it's another thing on what was spent for the sarees for 'muhurat' and other events. But I seriously objected to her going for the inexpensive saree for reception, though not until that evening when she appeared wearing it. Just wanted to make a point that the shopping times are difficult but not entirely impossible. Cheers!

it is personal perception

one should go high on shopping if one is having money, it is life's one and only one day. in india one is not gng to get married every 5-10 year. In case you spend money , you regret after 5 years that I have wasted so much money but in case you have spent less even though you had money then you repent for your whole life that why I haven't celebrated in gala style.

Many people are more bothered about the wedding which is just a a memory for the bride and the groom. everybody forgets about the marriage. teh expenses at the wedding can be used for geting a future together. you are right when you said wedding sarees are not used. it just stays in the warddrobe for some similar blingy occasion.

There is a better way

You can make it even simple. Go for a registered marriage, wear your normal dress. May be throw a reception to your close friends and relatives later. No worry about gold, wedding dress and so on. A celebrity couple (successful director and a top heroine from malayalam cenema) just did that and I thought it was a great decision. Probably the poor struggling middle class can learn from them.
