90% Res in Delhi Colleges
by kay on Jan 13, 2014 07:01 AM

I think it is correct to restrict the admissions in Govt colleges in Delhi to locals. Locals means all those in Delhi not a particular variety...say UPs, Punjabis, etc. That isa no chavunism...like Shiv Sena style.

As a local, I shd get some preference in my locality. Also, this way other areas can progress, as demand will grow for colleges, factories, etc.

Whole US uses 4 years system where you can take a major a minor some children do even two majors. The kids in teh US are smart, mature and craete world beating products and technologies.

By the time, a US student gets his degree, he is ready to craete and run big corporations like Facebook and Microsft but Indian boy has no self reliance or confidence and can't even marry by his choice (need parents' "permission" who to marry and "when"). Longer Education makes all the difference.

Also, two majors allow you to figure out what career you want to pursue. A 17 year old is too young to decide what he or she wants to do in the life.

America, America, America

Perhaps a bit of an exaggeration, but seems urban India, academia, business community, industry, media, cinema, middle class, the elected government, almost everybody in India is obsessed with and dying to be like and copy America in every walk of life.

Semester system
by R Chakravarti on Apr 25, 2013 08:36 AM  | Hide replies

I retired from a university in Kerala. College teachers here tell me that after the semester system was introduced, they have very little time for teaching. They are concentrating on assignments, tests, etc..

In my experience, this is not the case in American universities where the semester system started. There, the teacher has sufficient freedom to run a sensible system.

We have taken a good system and made nonsense of it!

ruining a system that should otherwise work is an Indian specialty.

As a student, I can say that semester system is nonsense. Profs rush through syllabus as students juggle CIA, Assignments and Semester exams.

NS system was more generous with holidays and breaks, esp before exams.
