I am a North Indian from UP but having lived in Bengaluru
by Vishnu Sharma on Jan 30, 2015 12:14 AM  | Hide replies

For more than 15 years I have fully imbibed the spirit of the Kannadigas.

To me these people and the values they cherish should serve as a beacon for all Indians.

I have said this to my Punjabi, UP and Bihari friends many times.

Be Healthy, Religious, Neat, Polite, hardworking and thrifty like them. Your own states will improve and you will not have to come looking for jobs down south.

Nevertheless, I have toured most of Karnataka and cherish most of their heroes and heroines and cultural figures from Kittur Chennamma to Purandhara Dasa. I have visited spots from Tala Kaveri to Kukke-Subramanya to Gokarna and of course Chitradurga.

I studies the Kannada Language, history and literature our of pure interest for 7 years
The Kannada people are among the strongest and most ideal representatives of the majority community in India.

The one song which kept coming to my mind when I was trekking in the Chitradurga fort area was the song sung by Vishnu Vardhan in the movie Nagarahavu.

I first listened to that song when I did not know a word of Kannada but saw the visual of Vishnu Vardhan
educating a class of school children about their rich history when visiting the fort by singing that song.

I have listened to it many times after learning Kannada and you can also listen to it.
The lyrics and extremely stirring and made my heart beat faster.

It talks about the bravery and foresight of Obava.

You can also search on
kannada Nadina Veera Ramaniya
and listen to it.

Vishnu sharma India today needs a lot of broad minded and all encompassing citizens who are ever willing to settle in any parts of the country and embrace the local culture without fuss.
You have aptly described Chitradurga in your nice little page and mentioned the famous old Kannada film of the 1970s- Nagara Havu which has showed Vanake Obavva in a envious role. I am very happy that our Country will survive all odds because of friendly people like you. Thanks for posting your views.

I have seen this Fort (just 35 Kms from Bellary) in 1980 & its really great. At least now, can Indians realise that where there were great Forts & Palaces, we should not let any City comeup? If any such thing comes up, they will happily use the boulders & even Fort wall Stones for foundations of not private people but Govt Offices. that is our greatness. Mera Bharat Mahan (choron ka)

Chitra Durga is afort in the midst of variously designed gates and Palisades providing effective defence to a fort from thirsty blood hounds Aggressors.
Now it stands as testimony of nature collaborating with man's effort to save his home lands.D. Goel

Well written piece. As one who lived and studied in Chitradurga for two years in the Seventies, glad to know its still well maintained. Its a fascinating fort with many interesting stories and legends , as also ideal for a day picnic.Felt good someone has chosen to write about Chitradurga. Great photographs too. During those times there used to be a small stream running down hill with ice cool water even in peak summer called 'Tan Neer Doni ' (or cold water stream) of which it was calimed that no one could find the actual source. Would like to know if its still there.
