If you do it without understanding its purpose, then yes it is a complete waste of time!

Homework should not be done after class but done immediately after the concept has been explained in class.

This is the best way to know if the student has understood the concept being taught!

Open discussion on the "homework" should be encouraged thereafter!

This way nobody will forget what they are taught and it will make exams redundant!

i've loved homework and i've hated homework. fe situations that make homework enjoyable -

1. you respect the teacher for their knowledge and wish to impress her/him
2. the teacher is your friend and you feel free to discuss the syllabus with him/her.
3. the questions are really mind boggling (trivia type) and you want to find the answer.
4. you want to learn through the homework and the topic is interesting.

situations that kill homework mood -
1. if you have to do it for namesake...to avoid punishment
2. if it is boring or just involves copying.
3. teacher is dumb or strict - you don't enjoy the subject coz of the teacher.
4. the topic is really boring...makes you sleep and questions make you snore.

ultimately, it boils down to the teacher and the questions given as homework. teachers should really research and formulate questions that encourages learning and invokes curiosity...but at the same time...be friendly to the students.

But...homework is necessary. syllabus is enormous. teachers barely get the time to finish the portions, leave alone make us experts in it. homework is one way by which you can make yourself perfect in it.

Maybe it can be limited to maths alone.Projects and practical assignments can be given in other subjects to enhance classroom teaching for students.

mebbe social science and languages can be removed. mebbe one can learn the language by taking books from library.

half of history what we study is fiction...geography...we can learn on the go from wikipedia...civics and economics tell about how the country SHOULD function....not how it functions.

mebbe we can include health (including mental health) and environment.

Home work

It only helps the all round development. Some thing a student can do independently without a teacher's glare/assistance. Only it should be purposeful & objective .By this mean teachers should not offload their work to students by way of homework

Home work for students
by sanjoy satpathy on Nov 30, 2012 08:30 AM

Most of the home work is solved by parents or friends through mobile phones. It's just to keep the students engaged at home so that they do not disturb their neighbours or parents.

The students have to be classified primary middle and senior school and then undergrads
Primary kids shd not have homework as usually parents or tuition teachers do it
Others may be given assignments related to what is taught
Creativity has to be encouraged in their minds. Whetherathome at play or study

Agree on classification. I think it depends what kind of homework is assigned. For example, in the case of secondary school, a non-math subject such as geography should be part of home work. Simple example is students are introduced (not "tough") to European countries & home work includes to not just a list of countries & capital but introduce some curiosity aspect such as three things that country/capital is famous for.

type of homework
by Ravi Shankar on Nov 30, 2012 05:30 AM

The research says that the type of homework being done matters. My son is 13 and and I have noticed that in certain cases, the homework he gets is the kind that requires him to either copy questions and answers from the textbook into the notebook, download pictures from the internet, make a ppt or simply mug up a passage. This kind of homework is, in my opinion, utterly useless. Its not only the time wasted, but prime time that could have been used for actually adding value. I think the same is confirmed by the research. in maths of course, it is difficult to give homework that involves mugging etc, hence I think the researches found that giving maths homework actually improves the child.
