There is no political will to create universities of excellence. Ironically, the best Universities in the World have India professors but we can't do this in India.
I saw the state of affairs in Indian Universities in the last 1 and half years after returing from USA. I did my PhD from USA in the area of Plant Sciences ( Molecular Biology). I also have postdoctoral research experience from USA. I have applied to various Universities (agriculture univeristies) and even some IIT's but there is no response. Some of them call for an interview, but what happens is there re always internal candidates for the advertised research and teaching positions. These internal candidates got selected. I just can't understand why this is going on. I am more qualified then any of these other candidates but still cannot make the cut. There is a lot of politics involved in the way we recruit scientists and teachers, and also the way we do our research. Our research is highly manipulative and it gets published only in our local low impact Indian Journals. Its not upto the standard. The selection committees of the universities should try to hire talent from across the world and not simply hire internal candidates. Only when they start hiring people from other universities (hopefully from foreign univerisites), then only we can expect our teaching and research standards to improve upto international level. This internal breeding should be discouraged.

Vijay! Just forget about them! If you want to come to India, come only with money. The you can hire these coolies. Indians deserve to be ruled.
why do the IITs, IIMs, IISc, IIstatistic, perform better than the other universities and other leading coleges! they are better funded, the teachers are well paid, have well equipped libraries and laboratories!
the countries mentioned are more prosperous than India and the leadership is more focussed on development! it tells on the quality of students, teachers and the institutions. blossoming of CV Raman under poor condition of those days are rarity and not witnessed regularly! Pinto, an Indian spriter, was the fastest asian at the time of Independence. the other asian countries turned into a more prosperous one. they fund their sports more than India. their atheletes beat us squarely in most of events! the same goes into education also!
the few that reaches top bracket/level do on their own effort and less dependent upon the resources of the nation!
Our Universities focus on learning based on exam-results, wherein the guy/girl is expected to cram as many things as possible in the little brain and reproduce them most effectively on a piece of paper. Anybody, who is the best in this form of reproduction is naturally the topper, getting best of the picks of the Corporate Placement. The teachers spoon feed the students; but never engage them in creative and innovative thinking. Hence, no doubt in the matter of education, our Universities come last in the pecking order.
Our syallabus, exam process & research should be such that we generate quality employable candidates for the industry. For this the whole education system will require a very big shake up in every respect. Are we ready to do this & if so, what are are constraints, knowing very well the level of red tapism, politicians interference & prevailing corruption pattern in our country.
Don't compare India and China any more. We are not any where near to China in any thing, education, manufacturing, infrastructure etc. If our education institutions are not world class, the products also will not be world class. China, Japan, Taiwan, S.Korea : we are distant behind them. Why not do something about it? Shall we say dejectedly 'this is written in our karma'?
