i've got d90, dont buy SLR if you're not planning to learn it.. its useless for me as i use only auto mode! pretty frustrting sometimes.. but its an amazing camera!

D90 is specifically for the pro who are into indoor and modelling photography. So even if you are serious photographer but work outdoor mostly, don't go for it.

If you are just graduating from a point and shoot then dont go for D90, buy one of the mirorless cameras, eg micro four thirds,Sony Nex or the samsung NX series, they are smaller and easy to use. If you are serious about photography, and dont plan to use the camera in auto mode then buy a DSLR which are significantly larger

If you buy a DSLR, then also be prepared to learn photography - Even basics of photography will help you take great pictures. If not don't take a DSLR. No point in putting it in 'Auto' mode and shooting. Better take a normal point and shoot or a bridge camera

BTW, the D90 is great camera to begin in the DSLR arena. Don't buy D5100, D3100 etc. Start with a D90 body, do not buy the kit lens. Go for a 18-200 mm Tamron lens and you have a great camera at an affordable price.

As Julius Augustine has said try to go for a better lens Tamron and Sigma are both good lenses, Nikon Non kit are ace, Buy with a smallest aperture number you can afford, such as 2.8 if possible.

Check the Nikon 1 V1 full review here, after buying one be ready to spend some more, this camera does not support direct flash connections to start with.
As for D90, as the others have said needs to learn it, it is a semi professional camera, that is if you are a dedicated photographer who wishes to develop his/her passion yes then go for D90,If you are a point and shoot just want to capture a moment in time then D90 is not for you.
It is complicated camera for point and shoot people.

Too lenghty

I didn't have the patience to go through all slides. Nor do I understand most of the features. So can someone tell me that should I buy it or not?

If you don't even have the time to go through the slides, then definitely don't buy it. Just use the cam that is there in your cellphone. If you buy an SLR camera or even a mirrorless camera, it takes a lot of time to learn how to use it well.

Yeah Nex has APS-C size sensors which are way larger (larger sensor=better pics) than Nikon J1/V1 sensors. If you want a fast autofocus camera then Nikon othewise Sony Nex. Sony Nex Lenses are larger than Nikon since bigger sensor=larger lens. So if you want a small fast camera then buy nikon otherwise Sony Nex

Sony is the first brand to ignore when it comes to SLR.
