Live with Honour, says Shiv Khera
by bharat sant on May 02, 2012 09:57 AM  | Hide replies

Shiv Khera's writings are superb. One has to read with open mind. His books are just fantastic, every word a golden advice. His relatively less popular book "Living With Honour" is a gem of wisdom with special reference (my opinion) to corruption and righteousness. Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and State Assemblies should given a free copy (it will be terrific investment) to every elected member. PMO can buy 10 copies for their office. Even if 10 percent readers are influenced by the book and act with "honesty and integrity), this country will be blessed.

Shiv Khera washed cars, etc.
by R Chakravarti on May 02, 2012 09:44 AM

In the US and Canada, one can make enough money from, say, washing cars or dishes to put oneself through college! The title is misleading. I thought he washed cars in India. If that were the case, his achievement would have been really great.

Like him, I don't like reservations but they may be, to some extent, a necessary evil. For example, all sections of society should be represented in the police force. Think of Delhi in 1984 or Gujarat in 2002. But there should not be excessive reservations; for instance, the situation in Tamil Nadu is outrageous.

Car wash to Brain wash

This guy has graduated from performing car wash to brain wash. This is the kind of degradation which has happened to human kind where people like these are allowed to influence our decisions.

I thought that was progress.

Is it necessary to have a family background to be able to do any kind of intellectual work?

Shiv Khera - very plebian author, low level
by Argumentative Indian on May 02, 2012 09:26 AM

I find his books didactic and low level, for people who don't like to think.

I also find Shiv Khera comments on alchohol very similar to Anna Hazare's (whom I personally COMPLETELY SUPPORT in his fight against corruption) thoughts. This is good for people who have surrendered control of their lives long ago, people who have somehow convinced themselves that when it comes to taking responsibility, their minds stopped growing after the tenth year of their lives.

I found Stephen Covey's "7 Habits..." a much better self help book. Another excellent book is Brian Tracy's "Eat That Frog". I also loved reading and implementing in my life, the "Magic of Thinking Big" by David J. Schwartz.

Change our mindset
by karthik s on May 02, 2012 09:24 AM  | Hide replies

You know what!!! There is something in the air and water in india that makes us egoistic and arrogant.
A good many students from rich backgrounds who migrate to US or other western countries dont mind working in petrol bunks or pizza delivery hubs or for that matter always obey the rule of the land.
But once they are back in india thats when the "You know who I am?" attitude starts.
Shiv washing cars in a foreign country is no big thing because those countries believe in dignity of labour.
Well now do we think we will be a super power in this century . I bet no. Reason: Its not in our attitude to obey rules and have basic courtesy. Missiles dont make great nations its human attitude of the populace

1) In India, in the absence of any structured laws(*) till very recently, and the continuing poor enforcement of law, make the poor and physically weak disproportionately powerless. Hence there is a tendency to look down upon menial jobs.

2) In my growing years, it was considered unacceptable to become anything except an Engineer or Doctor. There was tremendous pressure on middle class students and failure to get into either stream was not an option. Today, working in a Call Center (which is definitely an intellectually much less challenging & satisfying job) is the most sought after career track.

The reasons for the above, I think are largely economic. If a person can live with bare minimum dignity, with the earnings of any profession, be it a Call Center Executive, or a Medical Doctor or a Hair Dresser and if laws are strong and well enforced then equality and respect spread very fast in society.

Thus, a poor man in the US, who say washes cars, gives live Demos for vacuum cleaners etc., will also be able to buy a used car after a few months, get an apartment on rent, get a cell phone and eat well. Ofcourse he can't buy a Mercedes SLS AMG (with a top speed of say 200 MPH), but his second hand Datsun will be able to go at say 55 MPH and the rich person's SLS is forced by law (within city limits not highways) to follow speed limits of say 50 MPH thus there is a great deal of equality creeping in, in daily life.

"Its not in our attitude to obey rules and have basic courtesy. Missiles dont make great nations its human attitude of the populace" - completely agree.

However, the civilized & sophisticated countries that we see around us got there through effective law enforcement. India is moving slowly in that direction, I am positive on India, but it will take some time for us to get there.

I don't like committing timelines that I don't control, but I'll stick my neck out this time, I think its around 25 years (for cities with population above 25 lacs).

Five reasons for the above prediction, that come to mind immediately, are as below:

1) Nitish Kumar
2) Narendra Modi
3) Navin Patnaik
4) Mohan Parrikar
5) Akhilesh Yadav

Hope he would not follow Dale Carnegie, the World renowned motivational speaker, and author of many books, one for example "Power of positive thinking" ended his life because of depression by committing suicide.

1) Dale Carnegie died of Hodgkins disease, which is a cancer originating from white blood cells, on 1 Nov., 1955.

2) The "Power of Positive Thinking" is by Norman Vincent Peale.

You don't have to Google to find out that Norman Vincent Peale wrote "The Power of ...", you have to READ THE ARTICLE ABOVE, its mentioned in the second slide, in the fourt line of the answer.

You right Sir. I have read many books of his works. He wrote many self help books one of them is "How to stop worrying and start living". Cause of his death is hugely debated you can find it in google itself.

by sourya biswas on May 02, 2012 08:29 AM

He should have continued washing cars instead of regurgitating old anecdotes and plagiarizing other people's work (look up his Wikipedia profile to find how he settled out of court)into trashy self-help books!
