All Indians should be able to name all states with capitals and all union territories. Also, Dispur is the Capital of Assam and Guwahati is the capital city of Assam. Dispur is an area in Guwahati, just like Nariman Point is an area in Mumbai.

But as a kid I read "Dispur" in my GK book though my Dad used to say it's Guwahati. When it was changed?

Capital of Assam is not Guwahati. It is Dispur. Guwahati is the largest city of NE India.

Assam does not have a permanent capital yet after Meghalaya was formed in 1972. Till 1972 the capital of undivided Assam was Shillong. After 1972 Shillong became the capital of Meghalaya and since then Assam has a temporary capital complex in Dispur which is located in the eastern side of Guwahati city. Hence the capital of Assam is Dispur; not Guwahati.
All these are going to get created as New states in coming few years. Just look at the way these politicians are going. And also the way these poll analysts on TV channels divide each region of a state in order to do better analysis. This mentality is very dangerous for India.

Yah you r right, may be after some time along with question will be capital of, Al-Quida, Taliban etc, etc
