IIT's have caused 'brain drain' in India for the last 50 years !
by Cedric Vaz on Jun 25, 2012 08:42 AM

Has anyone done an independent study or survey on how many IIT passed out students since the last 50 years (1960-2010) are still in India? The results will be shocking for everyone to see as most have migrated en masse to the West over the years. Indian tax payer's money has been spent on these IIT-ians for the benefit of affluent and rich nations. The biggest loser is India, Indian common man and Indian economy which could have benefitted from these brilliant students had it not been for this brain drain !
So why have IIT's in the first place unless we can reverse this 'brain drain'?

Autonomy is an oft misused word
by Ujwala Kulkarni on Jun 25, 2012 03:34 AM

Autonomy isn't a license for an institute to do WHAT IT LIKES. It only grants a free hand to meet the set objectives and mandates without interference on a day-to-day basis. In this sense, the IITs have had both administrative and curricular autonomy since beginning.

AUTONOMY ISN'T A LICENSE TO COMPROMISE ON OBJECTIVES AND MANDATES. The IITs were started with the objective of producing brilliant engineers and scientists who will help in Nation building through knowledge and innovation. And also to create world class research institutions and national centres of excellence to raise the research capabilities of other institutes. These mandates remain largely unfulfilled. Instead the IITs boast of testimonials acquired by some of their students in the US. This was never an objective. In world ranking, that is based on several factors like academic excellence, research output etc. IITs rank very very poorly. Many of the institutes above them receive far less govt. funding and support.

A serious introspection and objective assessment of the situation will convince EVEN THE IIT MANAGEMENTS that an in-depth review of their system is long overdue.

If govt. wants to intervene in the education system; let them start at the basic level. from class 1 to class 12. Let there be uniform syllabus all over the country.. Central govt. should take over the basic edu.
there should not be any private schools who are running school as business/commercial enterprise . every child in INDIA has the right to education and let it be provided by the govt. If it is not possible let them not interfere. the present scenario is class divide among the haves and the havenots. already enough damage is done by private education institutions. enough is enough.

Prescription for Disaster

The dilution of criteria for entrance to IITs is the best way to mess up India's future. If there is one thing which India is well renowned for, it is the quality of Engineers from IITs. Kapil Sibal is on a mission to mess this too.

Thanks, Mohan

The government must leave the IITs alone. India still needs its islands of excellence perhaps with a bit more inclusivity and a bit less elitism. If we have nothing great left to aspire for, we will regress into that bottomless pit where excellence is reduced to an exercise in achieving the least common academic denominator.

IIT is best understood by those people who run them, the faculty,, the professors,so leave the decision to them, why these ministers are trying to destroy it.

What is harm in single common test? Less number of test means less stress upon young minds.

Single common test for engineering students.
Weightage to 12th marks.

There is a process called 'normalisation'. it has been tested earlier quite satisfactorily. Admission to the very first engg. college (now IIT Roorki) had been done through this process for many years.

All politicians of all parties should have a commonsense test. There should be a common test for entry in politics. With all reservations?
