Thanks to Rediff, for bringing this very valuable information. There are several books on the subject which if followed seriously by all -especially coming up younger generation, this country will overcome a lot of hurdles. I had followed similar golden rules in my career and no regrets at all.

How to be successful at work:
by abc_xyz abc_xyz on Jun 22, 2012 01:08 PM  | Hide replies

1. Try to learn as much as you can from fellow colleagues.
2. Never every help your colleague, if it doens't transalate into your success directly or indirectly.
3. Be sincere at work. Never waste time chatting with colleagues.
4. Never ever get close to anyone of your colleagues.
5. Dont show any sympathy towards your colleagues and at the same time dont expect sympathy from your boss too.
6. Accept your mistakes. Try not to repeat them. But never accept others mistakes, even if it leads to quarrel.
7. Always smile at your colleagues, whehter you have a good rapport with them or not.

By following these, you are bound to become an indespensable asset in your group. This is the perfect stage to set your demands as the team wont function well without you.

1. Demand more salary, if not satisfied.
2. Demand flexible working hours (like evening shifts on specific days, no weekend work, work-from-home options etc)
3. Choose your team if you aren't satified with certain individuals.
4. Never insult others in public, at the same time if someone insults you, hit back instantly and loudly.
5. Take care of your career. Dont ever bother about the company's fortunes. Even at losses, demand a hike or threatent to quit.

Remember, successful people dont have many friends.
Successful people dont create politics, but know how to sail through one.
Successful people keeptheir professional, personal and marital lives seperate.

Nice message in addition to a well written article. But,I do not agree with many of the suggestions.remremberthe aim.Is it to be successful by your definition or by the other's definitions?Secondly successful people by the society standards are not necessarily Happy people. so have your priorities, before you follow other's advice.

Do not sit late because companies do not pay overtime. I worked in a company which never paid overtime, though i sat late.what a waste of my time.

If you stay late , they wont mind ,and if u ask for a compensation , they say 'who asked you to work till late' but if u come 5 minutes late to office they will create a ruckus !!

If you do your job well, no one can play politics with you. Truth always prevails in the end. If situation is really bad, its best to leave for another company.
