Do you agree with NASSCOM's report that only 26 per cent of engineers are employable for technology services?

Every body understand that. When uneducated person can hold a post of minister. The result will be like that. How Indian professors holding PHD does have basic knowledge of his/her subject. I know few universities just selling PHD's.The roots of the problems are all connected to politics and ministers. Example: any minister can become aviation ministers

Why feel surprised at all ??

Given such a huge population, it is the natural and obvious consequence. This huge clutch of substandard engineers are actually neither truly engineer and nor a science graduate. They are something inbetween. Now, if there were not so many mushrooming low grade engineering colleges, where would these boys would have gone to do their graduation? Are there sufficient general science colleges of good standard in the country to accomodate so many students who are now somehow accomodated in these low grade engineering colleges? So this gives the opportunity to the promoters of these colleges? In this situation how can AICTE maintain the quality?? These low grade engineering colleges are actually giving relief to the government from the responsibility to provided colleges for higher educations for such a large number of students. And the students passing out from these colleges are neither fit to be engineer, nor fit for a high standard science college. So, it is to be accepted that these boys and girls are getting a touch of technical studies. Some of them at least will be able to make a life out of it. Other, in any case, were not fit for a better career. So, there is nothing to repent. This is natural fate for a nation of such huge population.

unemployability of present day engineers
by pundlik rao on Jul 05, 2012 10:14 AM

The facts mentioned are very true.To reduce the problem indusries should devote some time & funds to train these fresh graduates in their training centres so as to make them suitable as per their requirement.Trainees should concentrate on what they LEARN during the training & NOT ON WHAT THEY EARN !

Big Irony!!!
by Dude on Jul 05, 2012 10:12 AM  | Hide replies

Engineer should have capabilities to indetify cause, able to do research and able to provide solution plus he or she shd be innovative.

But in current world when Engineering colleges are spreaded like mashrooms in the country any tom dic harry is able to do engineering and get job in infosys & tcs...some of them are sitting with me as well.

Currently, Interviewers look beloow qualities..

1. he shd be poor.
2. he shd have regional background.
3. he shd be ugly and have many brother & sisters.
4. he shd not have smartness or capability to do job but he shd have good skills to fond his bosses & able to kick anyone who is not fit in his category.
5. if he or she is sc/st then plus. etc....

employability of engineers
by jkj on Jul 05, 2012 09:55 AM  | Hide replies

unemployability factor is due to deterioration in quality of admissions not only from point of view of academics but also of attitude and aptitude. Todays student claims to be fit to be engr when he scores only 30% marks in theory expaecting 90% in internal assesment to make required 50%. His projects are generally available in the market freely or he reproduces something which probably his cousin produced in the same manner. He does not want to attend even mendatory number of classes. In all his negative attitude, he is sither strongly supported by parents or at least not interfered by them who actually want to see their ward not only awarded degree but also be assured lucrative job by mere payment of fees by the parents.
The concerned college can bring better companies only if the companies expect quality. In the quoted example, why the candidate could not make it to even third rate companies bruought to the campus. I think that the sympathy is misplaced. Good candidates make it to the best of companies by direct application and without the support of the institute.
The admission cut off is lowest for engg and still seats remain vacant despite unsuitable candidate being admitted.
I think that the student, parents and the institutions should take a practical view of above and ensure that employable engrs are produced.

some suggestions:
Increase duratyion to 5 yrs to give adequate attention to required subjects
Internal assessment to be done away with or if continued, awrd shold be at a number of times periodically instead of once in the semester.
attendance monitoring on regular basis at a level difficult to temper.
Attendance requirement to be strictly implemented at university level to obviate unethical tempering at institute level(which is sometimes due to pressure from aothirities/ politicians).
communication skills to play more important role in admission criteria i.e cut off should also include the subject of medium of instruction.

recruiters look for knowledge, attitude, aptitude, tenacity and perseverance, adaptability and desire to acquire knowledge. They will not be satisfied with limited bookish knowledge worth scoring min pass marks but would look for depth &application of that knowledge.many of these are evaluated on first impression.

Employability of fresh Engineers in recent perspective
by SS Choubey on Jul 05, 2012 09:55 AM

In the wake of development arising out of globalisation,Engineering and professional colleges have come up both in private and govt with one regulating body AICTE,New Delhi with regional office in different zone and state Technical Universities but education is lost because of inefficient regulatory bodieswith hazy objective towards quality education and implementation of plan and policies with crippled hand.Education is not what it is supposed to be.Society has also myopic view of education as means for good employment andas colleges are charging tuition fee ,they are to provide employent besides degree certificate.Industies and other employers have not time to employ fresh graduate and train forsix months to one yr making them suitable to their present assignment.Earlier Public and Private sectors have followed this and never complained about employability of fresh Engineers. Now IT sectors, who are the bulk employer from engg colleges ,have neither patience nor time to train large nos of recruits before putting them on the assigned jobs. This haste has made confused them as wellas individuals regarding potential of employed engineers to take up the responsibility and roles to assumed in future. This fustrates every stakeholders which finally shares the view of NASSCOM that 26%of engineers are employable. To make more engineers employable, every body is to supportive freshers to adjust and adopt the industrial environment for new role

Engineers potential for employment.
by krishnan bala on Jul 05, 2012 09:20 AM  | Hide replies

The Nasscom survey has only served to underline the deficiency that was existent in the educational system for over three decades. The explosion of IT and its allied services and the socialistic pattern of education where every private college became a deemed university and started vending its wares to the highest bidders in the market duly supported by politicians of all hues with the sole aim of mopping up the public money has nevertheless contributed to this pitiable state of engineering education.Aggravating this disease is the abnormal wish of parents of average student to drive his ward to this stream with a view to increase his earning potential if not to raise his bidding price in the marriage market. The whole nation was gung-ho with first generation cobbler's or a farmer's son becoming a graduate engineer in the prospering nation while concealing the fact that the poor boy was unable to earn even a pocket money with that qualification !A sort of apparition was created by granting reservation in admission by reducing the eligibility criteria and by introducing large scale corruption in the academic evaluation, such that any one with a pass mark and slush money or political influence could become an engineer and doctor !After the 2YK the batch if IT engineers were unable to find any low level jobs and had to settle for some mediocre occupation un-connected with their education. The new avenues like the back office and out-sourcing how ever kept the new entrants wishing

The problem of the Eng graduates of not being upto the standard, the raw Engr is to be nurtured by the appointing agencies by imparting Induction training for the first 6 months to get accomtomed to what is the job requirement he is to perform . This will enable the aspirant to perform to the Orgn needs fittingly. This will boost the candidates confidence in his performance.
Alternately, the Govt may think of starting a stipediary sceme , to be centrally organised for recruitment of fresh Engs passing out of college by calling and selecting candidates and allt them to different factories/ Orgsfor a period of 6-12 months payying them a stipend during the period . Then the Organisation afer completing the traing may even like to retain the trained candidate. It is pertinent to note that such a sys tem existed during the beginnig of 1st 5 Year plan period , when the Govt/ the Organisation used to pay a monthly stipend to tne Graduate Ehgr/ Diploma holders candidtes.I was one such candidate selected as Govrt Of India stipendary from Madras centre and had my training in ITI Banglore , trained for an Year an d was obsorbed in regular cadre.Though this sugession appears to costly , but it will finally prove fruitful not only the candidate but also the Organisations.
