Chetan Bhagat's real contribution.....
by rajan bhatt on Feb 17, 2012 03:57 PM

The good thing about Chetan Bhagat is that he does not have pretence about him. He does not go around boasting that he is writing literary fiction of the highest order. He admits that his novels don't have super eloquence which is a great thing. The second thing is that it is not at all necessary that a book have super eloquence for it to be great. In fact in a country like India - a simpler language means having a greater reach, which brings me to the real good contribution that Chetan Bhagat has made in India.

Recently I was travelling in sleeper class train on Western Railways. I was in the lower birth and the upper births were occupied by three college going students - one girl and two boys. All of them were preparing for competitive exams and were carrying books in Hindi medium. After discussing a few math problems they started discussing various things and suddenly they started about Chetan Bhagat's books. One of them had read even the latest book and boasted about having read all of his books and owning each one of them. The other two - including the girl had also read all his books except the last one.

Now if you had heard them talk otherwise - they would never have come across as book readers especially - English books. But here they were having lapped up all his books. I am sure they hadn't read much else but heck - this guy has reached even such small town people especially youngsters and that is a huge contribution.
Kudos Chetan Bhagat.....

rajni effect

he knows that he is a sub standard writer...still he can connect to people because he is an IITan(rajni effect) since there is already a language problem in this country and no body is even perfect in their own language. He can manage to sell through "rajni" effect since language is less appealing to people and being IITian is more.Being IITan he can display popular "sub-standardism".

Thanks to Chetan that he finally told us that he does not care about language. He saved me a few bucks as I will never go to buy his books. I was almost being swayed into the hype he and his paid media has created.
