Step in the Right Direction !
by Srinivasa Raghavan on Dec 21, 2012 02:23 PM

Thought this is a step in the right direction, the government has to initiate MAJOR action against the accused and send a strong message. The way the government works we will have 4 leaders visiting the victim and post that its one more statistic. Stern action is the need of the hour and will likely be a deterrent.

Better phones
by dhananjay patil on Dec 21, 2012 02:15 PM

In the situation like the recent one at Delhi, the victim may not get a chance to open application and hit the panic button. The assaultant will first grab the cellphone and try to throw or switched off it. Off-cource in some cases the victim may get some help because of this.

But the best solution it to develop phone device which will have a small panic button installed on the phone itself which will initiate the panic procedure by just hitting it.(they need to figure it out that it doesn't get hit by just putting in pocket or accidentally) Secondly once the panic button is hit the phone should enter into a mode where it can be traced even if the device is switched off and able to send panic messages using whatever network is available.

I guess such phone will be a big hit and well easily become popular not just for women but for school going children, men working or traveling at odd hours or in odd areas.

Secondly make all the public transport/ autos etc GPS enabled so that they can be traced easily. Without that impound their registration.

Apps

All these apps are just useless if they are going send alerts to the Police. Even if the alerts are sent to friends, they should in turn contact Police to get some action initiated. So, that's a futile exercise. Best option for w0men is to stay away from unsafe places and avoid venturing out late in the night. Please do not have a false definition of independence and liberation in your minds. Just get out of that mind set.

Agree with Santa. Apps are just there for certain ocassions, and one may not use such apps everyday, and hence forget when in need! And, most of these apps run well only on high-end handsets which have good GPS chipsets and 3G or 4G service for high speed internet for AGPS. Else, these apps will not really work "fast" on normal handsets. If one has to use technology, then there should be a certain app running on the phone which "detects" screams and sends out an alert automatically to user's Facebook or Twitter or bulk SMSes to family and friends. Again, such apps will work on high-end handsets (costing > Rs. 25K)...

Actually, the mindset of the men should be changed. What time is too late according to you ? Is 9.30 PM is late for you ? Men's mindset should be changed to allow girls to live the life they wanted. The world is equal to them as well and just because they are women they should not live in fear because of some men with the wrong intentions. We, men, should change ourselves and let everyone live happily. Everyone's life is precious. very precious and we cannot dictate.

Your message is too theoretical in nature and not suitable or applicable in the real world. I'm saying this because all men in the world do not think the way you and I do.
