SMART GUY- LIFE OF PI
by Dr K Saravana Dr K Saravana on Dec 10, 2012 06:51 PM  | Hide replies

I think the writer has missed the metaphor in the story. Mr Richard Parker is Pi, The orangutan is his mother, the hyena is the nasty chef, and the zebra is the vegetarian buddhist sailor.. The story is about how Pi comes to terms with various oxymorons in all religions (like jesus was punished for crimes of his children)..how a soft vegan becomes a carnivore and even kills the chef to beat the odds and survive..How due to his times in the boat and due to the compulsions of survival, his innate human side is frightened of his own barbaric image(TIGER) that he tries to abandon his tiger side and flee with only his raft with his human side but later has to come to terms with both his sides due to the same survival concerns... The best scene was when he does not get the opportunity to say goodbye to his tiger side in the end when they make it to the shore -which is then portrayed as the selfish side of Pi's character which is never to be seen again.. That is the true story of the life of Pi.. Everything else is make believe by Pi to convince the world that he had a great story to tell which would leave him alone to his now new found faith in religion, philosophy etc.. remember he had already suffered in his childhood because of the fact that he did not have a great story to tell to go along with his name..he was not prepared to commit the same mistake again..SMART GUY- LIFE OF PI

A story is a story - what one takes from it depends on where the person is coming from!! e.g. the original story doesn't dwell on super-natural as much as film does.

pi gives meaning in life
by dinesh kumar on Dec 10, 2012 03:00 PM

the whole story is about once quest in realising the goal human existence. The scene when the Tiger stares into the star lit sky and Pi asking him what he is staring at is the most memorable moment in the whole movie.do animals have higher sense which many of us materialists have very little in us.Pi to me, as middle aged person who had seen India go thro tremendous upheavals form 80's to today, reminds the strength of an Indian spirit which made India the most sought after country in the world,so well brought out by Ang Lee.It is a tragedy this noble concept is compared to business ideology. It is the depth they are trying to brand
