Nirdesh this is an excellent article providing a different twist to the Imambara. However there is a small error which has crept in while referring to economist Jean Dreze you have mentioned Jacques Dreze. Some of our old cities have such historical charm which metros with their ultra modern cravings can never match.
Thanks for such an informative article. Dont worry about a few people here who always criticize on any given topic irrespective of what the topic is and try to take the topic to religion bashing. Most of these persons here are still in office working and show their frustrations, and that too at the cost of their employers. Looking ahead for more informative articles.
who copied whom? the mughals copied rajasthanis or the rajasthanis copied mughals? this fort is very much like rajasthani fort. no doubt the mughals were magnificent builders but it came at a cost and their subjects usually did not live well. also surprising that though though UP Area had many mughal rulers, the populace is still majority hindu.. hi Nirdesh, you like the mughals so much ..would you prefer them to be the rulers now??you would have to change your name to Niyaz singhullah!

Hey Dev Dude,
To put it in perspective, I happened to be in Lucknow and Bada Imambada is the sight to see when you are in Lucknow. You are amazed with the structure and so read up wiki and other sources. And then this story of Nawab's generosity emerges.
Other questions - I dont think the Nawabs of Awadh were Mughals. Architecture has influences from all regions. As for changing my name, I am quite happy with it. Thanks.

All the nawabs did was to be wealthy and enjoy. That arrangement was made by Brits, so that the region is sissy enough to remain under their commands, and yet the common people remain poor and curse the nawabs instead of Brits. Nawab being mulsims never cared for welfare of countrymen so they quickly sided with Brits for centuries. This prolongated the Brit rule. Mulsims were the main reason of Brits 200 yrs occupation. That is why they were driven out to Pak. But the ones who remained back are raising their heads again to weaken India again. So they are siding with Kagress/Pak which are acting like Brits now. Mulsim population increase million times becos nawabs forcefully enjoyed native women. Our Poor country will keep suffering at the hands of this tribe that started destying us from 10AD century and never stopped destrying us. Shame on this whole tribe.

Dev, you should know that India was called Sone ki Chirdiya because of the Majestic rule of Mughals. Abhbhat, Nawabs never side lined with the British, you ought to know very well that they lost so much of their territories. Who sided with the British? Do you know how many IndianHenduzzs were working as soldiers in the british army?
Nawabs were just pleasure seekers but not kind to natives. They patronised art and during famine or dire times, the artist/musicians/architect people needed job more. So that was good. But it would have been better if they would let the non-nawabs to use the talent of artists. Nawabs concentrated all wealth to themselves using force by their predecessors. Then all art was channeled for royals or building mosks.

We really do not know for sure. Since the history is so distorted that we really cannot judge correctly. But what is true is the culture, arts and architecture of this era.

pseudoSecular rootless, characterlesss and nameless, I am a Hindu and an Atheist. What gives you the idea that I believe the story you claim that I believe? I am against religionz which deny/disrespectt other belief systems. And further, I have read much more that what I have written about. Now walloww in your frustrationn.
Enchanting and Beautiful building with class of its own. But why do visitors put graffiti on he wall, what do they get out of ruining an replaceable monument. What are they trying to insinuate. They must be retarded people.
It is really very sad that we still follow the legacy of Britishers, who in order to grab the state of Oudh or Awadh spread rumours to malign the nawabs who were responsible for the unique culture where others were put before self practically & not only theoritically as most of the religions preach. Sadly even this is taken as a matter of jokes. With the exception of Ghaziuddin Haider none of the nawab drank alcohol. Practical secularism was seen in the Ganga-Jamuni tehzzeb of Lucknow. Serious researcers like Rosie Llewlyn Jones know the truth but we Indians are still in the dark, because of the apathy of our governments. It is high time we know the truth

Hi Zafar,
I echo your sentiments.
We all know that our history has been doctored by the British to suit their own ends.
Despite the doctored history, what comes out is the truly unique characteristic of the Nawab - his generosity and keeping the welfare of his subjects and people above everything else.
Out dated though but Strange were their escentricity,Nobel were their projections but historics their vision.Thats why they are remembered in this age of hitechnology.

Despite true or false eccentricities, what is undisputable are the culture, the arts, the architecture and other great things about Asafuddaula. And it is heartening to know that the old culture co-exists with the malls and statue parks.
