If it is celebrated as Sister's Day or Brother's Day in the US...
by Ravi Iyer on Aug 04, 2017 01:21 PM

then the author will follow that as it has a "Global" appeal....for me as an Indian I am an Indian first and I know my roots and am proud of have a rich culture of family and tradition. If you look at it superficially, it sounds patriarchal but the bond is much deeper than that. Protection means help in the time of need. If you don't believe, then don't tie rakhi to your brother but please do not stereotype people who still value it.

Equally Dangerous
by Dude on Aug 03, 2012 10:01 AM

No brothers need protection from sisters as sisters always captures the Qween mother of house can do anything with brothers.

Sisters can be equally dangerous as spouses & they can eat your flesh for whole life.

It may not be a big thing for you
by praveen babu on Aug 03, 2012 12:53 AM

There are certain things & feelings which comes naturally, I do live in US & heart runs for my sisters when this festival is nearing or on.
The best complement from my wife is "for her she does not have a brother like me to take care of her", it does not mean there is an unfilled space in her life, she is happy but a brother is a brother like a mother is a mother no body can replace anybody that is the importance some relations in human life.
one last thing is, you should understand the inner meaning not just go by reading the so called net material. Practically how a brother can protect her when he is so far away, but she still believes that a brother is there for her

protection means..
by kannan k on Aug 02, 2012 09:38 PM  | Hide replies

dear Veenu,
Rakshabandhan means that the brother promises to protect his sister if he sees her in trouble. It does not mean that the sister is not capable of protecting herself.
Apparently you are in America and will definitively drive a car. If your husband drives with you as a passenger, does it mean that you cannot drive?
Rakshabandhan means iterating the bond between brother and sister, and he will be with her, no matter what. even if the sister is capable of taking care of herself... that's what is relationship about.

Good example bro. Just because this idiotic lady is in America (probably because she married some NRI), she is talking all this. I have seen lot of these kinds, who think that they are superhumans compared to common indians.

its all about the spirit and joy of the occasion
by traveller on Aug 02, 2012 06:22 PM

Raksha bandhan is an age old tradition and should be followed in spirit and its relevance at this day and age is no less. The author might not have experienced the joys and excitement as kids when tying rakhis. Today there might more marketing associated with raksha bandhan, but its all good as siblings don't get to talk as they get older because of work and distance. This is a day very much needed. An age old tradition with modern meaning, as simple as that.

by swatantra pal on Aug 02, 2012 05:37 PM

if you want to know something its good,
if you know have less knowledge and you want to talk, do it like that,
if you want to follow something and improve it, one should know it in details, no doubts pls
if you want to bake something with half knowledge its ur choice

Personally I don't know why fathers day or mothers day are celebrated on the days they are, still I say one should go with it and I know the auspiciousness of celebrating Rakhi or any other festival on the day they are ment for....

Let us clarify this to Veenu
by Abhijit on Aug 02, 2012 04:30 PM

As Veenu lives in San Diego her understanding and views are different from Indians.

1. We don't celebrate Mother's day and Father's day seriously. It is more celebrated by companies to sell thier products.
We always respect and love our parents. We don't need any special day for the same.

2. It is absolutely necessary for girls to have someone to protect them. That person should be brother only who will not expect anything in return from that girl.

India is still not very safe place for women. They can be tortured by husbands, in laws, police, rowdies, etc.

Girls with 2/3 brothers are always confident, mature and happy.
