Akshaya tritiya is not only about buying gold. This is only a prctice being followed since ages. Akshaya tritiya is a very auspisious day and it is said that this is the day on which lord bramha started his job of creation. Morever to gain peace of mind and satisfaction, this is a perfect day to give things like food grains, cerals, etc.. in charity to the needy.
In Maharashtra, this is the BEST MARRIAGE muhurta and for marriage to be planned on this day, you don't need to consult any Punditji. It is supposed to be a SHUDDHA muhurta.
And also out of the 3 and half muhurta s in a year , Akshayya tritiya is the 2nd full muhurta after the Auspicious "Gudi Padwa", i.e the Nava varsha Diwas.
So, any body planning to get married, Akshayya Tritiya is the best auspicious day, in addition of being auspicious for other work beginnigs as well.

The gold prices are soaring high and high like Himalayan Mountain every day. If there is control over the Gold Prices by the Government, then I can think of buying something in Akshaya Thritiya day.
